1. Our 17th season finally came to an end at Guildford when we were able to play our 156th day event which had been postponed due to the early December snow. Conditions were dry, mainly due to the strong wind which kept the rain at bay though it did make scoring on the back 9 quite difficult as we played into the teeth of it. It was disappointing that one of the driest courses around saw the need to have mats on up to half of the holes and I have written to the Club to point this out. The reason we play on courses such as this in the winter months is precisely to avoid this sort of problem.

2. Having said this I think people enjoyed the day, no one more so than Mike Christieson who added yet another trophy to the three (both KOs and the Tour Cup) he’s already picked up this season. His 40 points gave him a convincing lead over the rest of the field headed by Jason who now qualifies for the Captain’s Bowl at Burhill as Mike had already qualified for this event three times over! You’ve had a great season Mike and you’ll be pleased that your handicap is being adjusted to something more appropriate to the way you’re playing. We do hope you can reorganise your schedule to allow you to play in the Captain’s in a couple of weeks. Roger also had a good performance finishing third on the day and winning the Past Captains’ Trophy.

3. Another one who’s had a great season is Kevin as he confirmed his wins in the Chairman’s and Treasurer’s beating Messrs Barrett and Johnson respectively. Well done to our double winner and he nearly made it a third (and unique) treble but was just pipped by Les in the par 3 who thus became the first player to win this event in successive seasons. Some people have said they don’t understand how the par 3 competition works – it is explained with great clarity on the web site and if you still have any queries, don’t worry - just play the short holes well and you’ll do famously in the par 3!! Thanks to Hedley for all his input into these calculations.

4. So another season is over and we look forward to the new one starting at Burhill in a couple of weeks. If you’ve still not sent that cheque or paid the balance into the BAGS account, please do so quickly. It’s sad that a number of qualifiers for the Captain’s Bowl are unavailable. If you are not, our rule is to invite the runner up in the event you won to take your place. After the golf at Burhill we’ll be holding a short AGM when your committee offers itself for reelection. Its recommendation for Mike’s VC is Ian Barrett who has been a member of the Charity Committee for the last year and efficiently run the 2s Competition on BAGS days for some time.

5. Our Annual Dinner at La Meridiana was a huge success with many compliments being received from those present about the food, ambience and service. It was good to see a number of BAGS regular guests at this function. Your committee is already planning a similar event in January 2012.

6. There have been two resignations from BAGS membership both due to work pressures. We shall miss Ian Sellers and Gary Cooper but hope to see them as occasional guests, particularly at the Charity event.

7. Mike’s drive-in at West Surrey is already being planned and as his Captain’s Challenge he is asking people to estimate the length of his first drive as Captain. The entry fee is £5 and all bets must be in whole yards – Mike is not proud and will start at 0 so as his spreadsheet is now open, do send him your figures by e mail and pay him at Burhill or West Surrey. We have the maximum 70 people booked in for this event so are hoping Mike’s drive in will swell our Charity takings.

8. At the Burhill AGM I’ll be announcing our programme for 2012 which I’m sure you’ll find an exciting one. We’ve been working hard putting together fixed price deals well into the future and have found Clubs only too happy to commit to these given our healthy numbers.

9. Our thanks to all those who contributed to our Charity Fund at Guildford, from those who took part in the special Nearest the Pin hole right through to those who paid their ‘fines’ so graciously, not forgetting Mike who donated his day’s winnings. You are all very special.

Par 3 Results from Guildford

How you played on the Par 3 holes at Guildford is shown below.

Les Gordon had done very well on the par 3's earlier in the year so was a contender if he could maintain his average.  Although he was half way down the field at Guildford, which brought his average down steeply, it was just enough to beat Kevin Hawkins.

The calculation takes your stableford points on a hole diverted by the stroke index (2 points on stroke index 7 is worth a lot more than 2 points on stroke index 18).  Do this for each par 3 hole and multiply by 100 for the total score.  Points are awarded based on your position in the field, and these points feed into the annual competition.

The final positions for 2010 are on the Par 3 page, click here for the results.
