Ian Barrett continues his great run with a win in the Captains Bowl ... the handicap continues to fall - this time last year he was playing off 25. Our 16th season started brightly at West Surrey with a course in excellent condition which enabled two thirds of the players to hit 30 points or over so giving those members a good start in the Chairman’s. 48 people enjoyed fine weather with only the morning chill reminding them it was still late February. Some of the more energetic early starters were even able to get through 36 holes and still be back in time for a well earned drink before a good dinner. Our new members were all playing but one - technically a man who was rejoining us after being forced by business pressures to resign in 2005 – really made his mark as he scored 42 points off 11. Guy Simpkin is no stranger to the BAGS podium, having been there in ’94, ’96 and ’02 but this was his highest score in one of our events and shows he’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the new season. Congratulations and welcome back, Guy. It’s always good to see new names and faces in the prize lists and Ian Makepeace and Bob Maidlow provided just that with excellent scores over 40. One not so new face started 2009 as he finished 2008 at Hankley. Ian Barrett threw off his 4 shot cut and with 39 points won the Captain’s Bowl to qualify for the 2010 Competition. Well done, Ian. At the AGM Roger and Keith were duly elected to serve as Captain and Vice for the coming year. We’re sorry to lose Hedley and appreciate his terrific input to the Captaincy but are delighted he will take an active part in organizing the 2009 competitions. Those present at the AGM voted to retain the current Pairs KO format and to keep the Par 3 competition though we will make yet another attempt to explain the basis for its calculations to you all! Ian has now taken over the handicap role from Steve to whom we are very grateful for his considerable contribution over many years to BAGS. I am sure he will continue to make his views known from ‘the back benches’ (as he puts it). The invitations to enter the Singles, Pairs and Seniors have gone out and many entries have already been received. Please note these are due back by Wednesday March 11th to enable the draws to take place soon afterwards. The Charity event is taking up much of Chris’ time at the moment as he continues to try to get 4 balls from a range of Golf Clubs. These will be used as auction items, prizes on the day or raffle goodies. The Golfathon got off to a wonderful start as 18 x fourballs from the courses being played on the day were sold to sponsors within a matter of minutes at West Surrey. Still at £25 pp per round with the chance of one of those rounds being at Walton Heath or Burhill, it’s hardly surprising but we are still very grateful to the takers and of course any others who were involved in the quartets. We also greatly appreciate the generosity of Mike Christieson who, through his Company Atlantic Trading, has taken over the sponsorship of the Charity Event from the ailing RBS. Mike has been extremely supportive of our fund raising efforts in the past and we are all very grateful that he has been able to commit funds to this project. A big thank you also to Peter Barkham for Cooper Cobham’s continued support of the Hole in One prize at Betchworth’s 7th. We’ll try even harder than usual to win the car this year and help your sales efforts, Peter! All but five of the 2009 Charity hole sponsorships have been sold but it is not surprising that in today’s financial climate we have lost a few of last year’s supporters. If therefore you can help to put us in touch with a business or a person who would be willing to help in this are – cost £100 – we’d be very grateful. Our Wales Tour arrangements are going well and please note that the next payment of £200 is due by the Liphook meeting on 25th March. Talking of Liphook, please also ensure your balance for that event reaches me (or the bank) by this weekend Sunday March 8th. The Tyrrells Dinner on January 17th was very successful and arrangements have now been made to book next year’s event for Saturday January 16th. At the AGM I outlined many of our plans for next year. Our venues will include Hankley, Cuddington, Clandon Regis, Worthing and Croham Hurst and we are hoping to nail St George’s Hill for our 150th day event in April 2010. The tour next year will be based in Brighton and include some of the best courses in the South Downs area. We took the view that it was appropriate to plan a tour which did not involve too much travel and could be made available at well under £400.

Hope you enjoy some amusing golf thoughts (below) sent to me by David Jackson. Don't buy a putter until you've had a chance to throw it. Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing. When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls. If you're afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up or you can wait until the green is clear and top a ball halfway there.. The less skilled the player, the more likely he is to share his ideas about the golf swing. No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse. The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical unconscious motion that allowed you to compensate for all of your many other errors Everyone replaces his divot after a perfect approach shot. A golf match is a test of your skill against your opponents' luck. It is surprisingly easy to hole a fifty foot putt . For a 10. Counting on your opponent to inform you when he breaks a rule is like expecting him to make fun of his own haircut. Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts It's not a gimme if you're still 5 metres away. The shortest distance between any two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the center of a very large tree. You can hit a two acre fairway 10% of the time and a two inch branch 90% of the time. If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three. When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again. Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe. If you want to hit a 7 iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard. To calculate the speed of a player's downswing, multiply the speed of his back-swing by his handicap; I.e., back-swing 20 mph, handicap 15, downswing = 300 mph. There are two things you can learn by stopping your back-swing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove. Hazards attract; fairways repel. A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours. If there is a ball on the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball
is in the bunker. If both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint It's easier to get up at 6:00 AM to play golf than at 10:00 to mow the lawn A good drive on the 18th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game. Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you always end up having to pray a lot. A good golf partner is one who's always slightly worse than you are....that's why I get so many calls to play with friends. If there's a storm rolling in, you'll be having the game of your life. Golf balls are like eggs. They're white. They're sold by the dozen. And you need to buy fresh ones each week. It's amazing how a golfer who never helps out around the house will replace his divots, repair his ball marks, and rake his sand traps. If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he shot a six or a seven, he probably shot an eight (or worse). It takes longer to learn to be a good golfer than it does to become
a brain surgeon. On the other hand, you don't get to ride around on a
cart, drink beer, eat hot dogs and fart if you are performing Brain Surgery
