Bond ... Steve Bond was his name and 40 points was his score!

1. The day before our visit to Merrist Wood was one of the hottest of the year and we were indeed fortunate that by the next day it had somewhat cooled down though it seemed at one point we were destined for heavy rain. Thankfully this petered out after a couple of holes and we had good golf conditions. The course itself, while a good layout, was clearly not in the condition it had been a few weeks earlier when some of our members played it. Work on the course had taken place the week earlier and and this had left its mark both on the greens and fairways which looked somewhat dry and patchy.
2. Steve Bond produced an excellent performance to win the day with 40 points for his second BAGS victory. Clearly Steve plays better the nearer he is to his home (his other win was at nearby Puttenham in April 07) and on this occasion we could not have been closer to his Wood Street base so he duly responded! Well played Steve and you must be looking forward to Guildford in December next year! It was also good to see John Palfrey putting in a solid performance in second place with 38.
3. There will no doubt be much debate about the attractions of the Power Play concept which we tried for the first time in the afternoon 9. For what it’s worth, my own view is that it is a format more suited to the lower handicap players who are much more aware of pin placement than those of us who are just happy if we get it on the green, regardless of whether the ball is near the flag! Your committee will no doubt discuss its attractions in a week or so and I’m sure we’ll give it another airing next season.
4. As the leaders in the Chairman’s and Treasurer’s were not playing, Guy and Bob still lead but Burhill in October will no doubt test their skills in the home straight, at least in the Treasurer’s where a sub standard performance can have major implications.
5. Our heartfelt thanks to Roger and Pat for hosting a hugely successful Charity BBQ earlier this month. It was really sad that Pat had her accident in the morning before the guests arrived and she was very brave in socialising later in the afternoon when she had been advised to get her injuries checked out. This she did on the next day and a broken arm was diagnosed. Happily she is now recovering and has expressed her appreciation for the flowers we sent her as well as the other messages of goodwill. No doubt her recovery is being helped by the wonderful views towards the South Downs from the cottage, something which I know we all enjoyed on the day, along of course with the superb food.
6. Not long now to the tour and those involved will have seen the briefing notes I’ve issued. Tour veterans will know that our dress code at dinner is smart casual (but not too much please!) with no need for jackets or ties. Ian has collected many of the £15 pp he needs if you are to take part in the ‘owner’ concept (you win money if your player is in the day’s prizes) and will do the draw for who owns whom on the day before Southerndown when his group are already in Wales.
7. Congratulations to John Davies and Hedley on reaching the KO Finals, John in the Singles and Hedley in the Seniors. I’m sure it’s a total coincidence but each has reached the Final of the competition being handled by the other! Can the other matches which will determine the other Finalists please be played in the next few weeks before the tour.
8. Our October Burhill date is still heavily subscribed though there may be spaces nearer the day. We still however have some availability at Effingham on Wednesday December 2 so if you or a guest wish to attend a BAGS Christmas celebration, you’ll be most welcome.
9. We’ve had a warm thank you letter from Cherry Trees for the £2000 we gave them from our Charity efforts. Chris will be organising the presentation of much of the balance to the Marsden in the next few weeks. Meanwhile Keith is busy preparing his recommendations for the two additional Children’s Charities we’ll be supporting next year in addition to the Marsden. These will be discussed at the next committee meeting in early September and announced soon afterwards.

I look forward to seeing half our members (and two guests) in Wales three weeks today and don’t be worried about the weather – this is a BAGS tour after all!
