Keith Gatford records his first day win
at gloriously sunny Littlehampton ...
We had a great day
out at Littlehampton where the weather was lovely and the course
in great condition resulting in some excellent scores. There’s
something about a links course that attracts people and with 63 players – 50
members and 13 guests – enjoying
the experience, it was clear that our decision to go back within
two years to a Club we last visited in July 07 was extremely
popular. Obviously we have no control over the weather but the
wind was light by coastal standards and the day dry and sunny
so we could have no complaints.
With over 30 players scoring 30+ it was
clear that a big score was going to be needed to see off the opposition
and Keith Gatford duly delivered with a huge 43 points total. It’s
especially pleasing to report Keith’s success as he was one of
the founder members of BAGS all those years ago and has never won a day
event. When this result coincided with his first outing as Vice Captain,
you can imagine how delighted he felt, a feeling which is shared
by us all. As Ian wasn’t at Littlehampton, I cannot predict
the depth of the handicap cut Keith will endure but I’m
sure he’ll take it
well and with some degree of pride. Good on you, Gatford!
Though Keith was 4 points ahead of his
nearest challengers, there was a mad scramble for positions in the
high 30s as Twyford next door neighbours Steve and Nigel each scored
39 with three people only a point behind them. This has already resulted
in some big scores in the Chairman’s where with three qualifying
rounds completed, Guy now has 118 followed by Bob Maidlow on
110. These are impressive scores so early in the season and we
could soon see the 120 mark eclipsed.
Congratulations also to Chris Romain
whose 38 points meant that he became the first winner of the 150 round
trophy which has now replaced the 100 round version.
As usual at this time of the year, there
was much activity around the Charity fundraising. The Captain’s
Crowborough Beacon challenge (outlay £3) raised over £180
for a 4 ball at that excellent course and there were auctions of a St
George’s Hill
6 ball, a gourmet dinner at Glenn’s and a 4 ball at Liphook,
all of which helped our Charity efforts. The Golfathon 4 ball draw
also took place with Steve Rout getting the top course allocation
of Walton Heath though the other recipients also seemed happy
with the contents of their envelope. Many thanks to all who contributed
to this fundraising and we hope you enjoy the chosen activity.
Roger and Ian have been putting the finishing
touches to their plan to play 18 holes at different courses in a single
July day and have agreed an order of Club visits which allows for a different
hole to be played at each. No mean feat and well done both of
you.
Our order for BAGS ties has now been
placed and should be ready for Farnham. If you are not at that event,
we’ll
hold yours over until Charity Day.
The Knock Out competitions are underway
and some Preliminary matches have already been concluded. Do remember
that the next deadline is prior to Farnham in mid May so please advise
Hedley (Singles/Pairs) or John (Seniors) when you have fixed your dates
or finished your match.
The BAGS Charity barbecue will take place
on Sunday August 9th, venue and further details to be announced in May.
Those who were there last year know how enjoyable this was so make a
note in your diary then we can be assured of a good attendance.
Congratulations to Gary on being appointed
as this year’s
Captain at Mitcham GC. He’ll do a great job and I understand
he’ll be supported by Ian Sellers as his VC.
Due to Ian M’s absence at Littlehampton,
there will be a short delay in issuing the final results though you’ll
be advised by e mail from Steve once they are on the web site. At least
you’ll
have a flavour of the day’s highlights from this report which
I’ve issued earlier than usual due to my holiday arrangements.
Thanks to those who have paid for their
Charity Day place, either as part of a team or for the team itself.
It’s
a mammoth job collecting money from the best part of 112 people
which is why we start the exercise earlier than for a normal
day. John Moody and Chris are now working hard on the programme
and this will be issued to players in late May/early June.
Enjoy this fabulous weather while it lasts – I
only hope I find some where I’m going!
Terry Hulme
