Ian 'don't stop me now' Barrett does
it again at Farnham!
1. Fabulous Farnham seemed to be the general
consensus of the 51 players enjoying a course in tip top condition
and excellent food with even a choice of dishes at lunch. There had
been a Pro Am competition at the Club about a week earlier and clearly
a great effort had been made to impress the visitors. They certainly
succeeded with BAGS and we are now in discussions about a possible
return visit in 2011 if the price is right. The weather gods also
smiled on us as the previous week’s unsettled spell made way
for a lovely day, fully justifying the decision of those who bared
their legs.
2. Ian Barrett is in a rich vein of form at the moment. His first BAGS
victory only happened last July at Gatton and was quickly followed
by another at Hankley in December. Though he did not win the West Surrey
event in February earlier this year, he still won the Captain’s
Bowl and at Farnham his 38 points was enough to give him his third
day victory and the Winteridge Trophy. Ian works very hard at his golf,
is keen to see his handicap reduced and has clearly improved his short
game sufficiently to be a threat to the leaders at every event. Watch
out for him at Betchworth next month, even off his new handicap.
3. Steve Rout, as runner up at Farnham with 37, gets a qualifying spot
in next year’s Captain’s Bowl because Ian had already qualified
as the winner in February. Simon was only a point behind on 36 and
of the clutch of 35s, John Palfrey should be singled out, particularly
as he achieved his score (and managed another 13 holes in the afternoon)
without a buggy which he normally takes these days to help his knee
problems.
4. In the Chairman’s Bob Maidlow, having his best season for
years, reduced Guy’s lead by two points though he is still six
behind. Ian is third on 110. After the Betchworth event, Ian Marshall
will issue the Treasurer’s Trophy standings as quite a few will
then have reached the five qualifying rounds level and I imagine that
in June Hedley will have something to show on the Par 3 status.
5. The new BAGS ties were well received and out of the 36 available,
thirty have already been spoken for. We would like to keep a handful
of the balance for new members in future years but could be persuaded
to part with another one or two if you’d like a new BAGS image.
6. The Singles and Seniors KO draws were made at Farnham and have now
been issued by e mail. As usual please note the deadlines and stick
to them. With the decent weather and light evenings, there really is
no excuse not to complete your match(es) on time so make contact soon.
7. All energies are now directed towards a successful Charity Day at
Betchworth in just under three weeks time. The programme is now with
the printers, the OOP needs only a little fine tuning and we even have
two reserves in case of last minute problems. We are very grateful
to the Presley family for making available for the auction a week at
their luxury apartment on the French side of Lake Geneva (Léman)
which is an ideal base either for a winter skiing holiday or a summer
golf/walking break. Getting there is easy as well – it’s
either a day’s drive in the car or a relatively inexpensive flight
to Geneva. When you get the programme, do look at how you can help
our fund raising efforts, either in the auction, signing a tenner,
buying raffle tickets or even at this late stage, sponsoring a hole.
Cancer is a ravaging disease which has directly or indirectly affected
all of us. When it hits children the effect is even more distressing
so let’s do what we can to help the Marsden in its battle to
overcome this terrible illness.
8. We are still awaiting confirmation of our St George’s Hill
slot for next April. You’ll recall it’s our 150th day event
and we’d like to do something special to celebrate. The likely
date is Thursday April 16th so do try to keep that free for the moment
and we hope to have firm news by the end of May.
9. Our Crowborough Beacon event in July is a 27 hole competition though
as usual it will be possible for those who prefer to play only 18 to
start at lunchtime. If you normally are one of these players but for
this event wish to play all day, PLEASE SEND ME A NOTE TO CONFIRM YOUR
INTENTIONS. Buggies are available at CB but do book well ahead.
10. Remember that on July 2 Mike Christieson, Roger and Hedley play
their 18 holes at 18 different courses. A special unique scorecard
is being produced to mark the occasion and a facsimile will appear
in the Charity programme. Good luck to the boys and their drivers with
the satnavs!
See you (very) early on the 11th.
Terry Hulme
