Guy completes a great year with another win

The newsletter is shown below, followed by the detailed results and handicap changes.

1. As I write, the rain is hammering down yet again and I am so relieved that our final event of the season went so smoothly and was really only rained on for about 5-6 holes (and that’s if you were at the back of the field). With other Clubs in the area closed that day, we were lucky that Effingham drains so well and that the day before was dry, giving the course some respite from the weekend’s deluges. Obviously the greens were very soft but the course generally was in good condition. The turn out was very high with 67 players including 55 BAGS members.

2. Scoring was generally very high with 16 players making 35 or higher and over half the field reaching 31 or better. It was therefore tight at the top and in the end Guy prevailed with his score of 39. This was his second win of the season – he won our first 2009 event at West Surrey – and his fifth overall so he’s leaping up our Hall of Fame. In so doing he’s within a whisker of reaching a handicap of 8 and on this basis there’s little doubt he’ll be coming down further next season. Well done Guy on a great first season back with us as a member after your time abroad.

3. Well done also to John Hawley on his second place and to Richard Dakin on finishing third. This result means that Richard’s handicap has been reduced to 5.2 and ensures that he ends the season as our lowest handicapper. I don’t know whether to offer congratulations or not but it’s quite an achievement!

4. Guy set the pace from the start of the season in both the Chairman’s and Treasurer’s and has led all the way. In so doing he has (I think) set several records. He is the only player I recall leading the whole season in both competitions and I believe these are the highest scores (certainly since 2000) in both. He has also achieved the greatest winning margin in each competition. Fantastic play, Guy. In both competitions the runner up was an ever improving Bob Maidlow.

5. While these two majors provided no surprises, the par 3 saw a big upset as Les Gordon played the short holes extremely well (he got two 2s) and achieved a sufficiently large winning margin on the day to ease past Hedley by just over a point on the season. Though Les only scored 29 in this round, he was obviously inspired on the par 3s and this to me is the perfect justification for this competition as it offers opportunities for success even when your overall game is not top notch. Well done Les and with your par 3 performance you have made it into the Captain’s Bowl Competition at Hankley. A list of the other qualifiers will be issued soon.

6. Well done also to Stuart who won the past Captains’ Trophy for the second time at the same time as winning the Disaster Trophy for the first time! All those at Effingham know why…

7. Thanks to all who responded in such numbers to the Tour research questionnaire and the decisions were quite clear. The 2010 Tour Cup will be decided over 4 individual rounds though with a discard so the best three scores will count and from 2011 the tour will take place from Tuesday to Friday. There was also a clear majority for Belgium being the venue in 2011 and work will begin on that in the spring of 2010 though we already know that the lovely (and lively) city of Bruges will be our base. There was also a solid vote for Scotland in second place so I think it’s likely we’ll be going north to the Inverness area in 2012. In the meantime we have 30 people already booked on the 2010 South Downs Tour so if you are wavering on this, do decide quickly as only a limited number of additional rooms is available.

8. You’ll also have seen the booking Form for next year which some of you have already returned. Please make sure you send this with your 2010 subscription by the end of the year so that we can pass on likely numbers to the Clubs concerned. This is particularly important in the case of St George’s Hill where we are planning to hold our 150th day event in April. This is at the moment for members only but it is possible that there will be some additional spaces made available to non-members if there is room.

9. Our next event and our opener for 2010 will take place in January at Tyrrells. So far the number of bookings has been on the low side by BAGS standards but we hope that now that the menu options have been issued, it will be realised that on offer is a first class evening’s entertainment at an excellent (and subsidised) price.

Thank you for supporting BAGS during 2009 and my best wishes to you all for a Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year.
