Jason shines through on a wet day in Kent
1. Our luck with the weather was bound
to run out at some point in this most changeable of summers and our visit
to Crowborough Beacon coincided with a low which seemed during most of
the day to be sitting right on top of the course. A pity, as it’s
a lovely course with some stunning holes, all very different from each
other.
2. To score well on such a course, it’s imperative to stay on the
fairway so you are not punished in the rough and the heather. While that’s
easier said than done, Jason managed it throughout the day as he amassed
56 points over the 27 holes. He was remarkably consistent, scoring 36
in the morning and 20 after lunch. This was Jason’s first win as
a BAGS member though he had several successes as a guest in previous
seasons but it is unlikely to be his last as he is one of our most consistent
players which should stand him in good stead on the Wales Tour. Well
done Jason and great also to see Peter Robertson putting in such an excellent
performance in second place.
3. Because the scoring wasn’t high at CB, the Chairman’s
Shield standings are as they were with Guy in a strong position as he
still leads Bob by six. The Treasurer’s is much closer as just
over a point separates the same two players. Remember though that in
this competition a sub standard performance in even one event can make
an enormous difference so when the two of them play in their next BAGS
event at Burhill, it could be crucial. It is also wise to look for those
currently on NQ who might storm through in one of our remaining three
events.
4. We currently have an excellent (for August) turnout at Merrist Wood – money
please by the end of the coming weekend – and apart from playing
a course which has received high praise from a number of you who recently
sampled it, it will be interesting in the afternoon to try a team version
of the Power Play concept which Guy is so involved with.
5. Our plans for the tour are now in place and thanks to all who have
paid their balances on time. We’ll be 32 in all as past-member
Phil Seymour will be making a welcome return. Eight players are so keen
to get down to Wales that they are playing an extra round at Ryder Cup
venue Celtic Manor on the Tuesday before the tour proper starts. When
the results come out, look out to see whether the additional golf helped
or hindered their preparations! Whatever happens, the tour will offer
its usual mix of memorable golf on some superb courses followed by enjoyable
evenings in an outstanding hotel.
6. Our Golfathon players (Roger, Mike C and Hedley) tackled their first
hole at 6.45am on July 2nd and went from strength to strength, scoring
36, 38 and 40 respectively. This was an excellent result when you take
into account they were playing their holes at 18 different courses with
varying conditions and greens. Thanks again to their sponsors and we
hope you’ve enjoyed playing the courses you bid for. Though the
money isn’t yet all in from the Charity auctions and pledges it
looks likely we’ll be able to give at least £14000 to the
Marsden, £2000 to Cherrytrees and £1000 to Tadworth Court
so needy children will be the total beneficiaries of all our efforts
this year.
7. Our final Charity event will take place at Roger’s on Sunday
August 9th. A late flurry of acceptances has now taken our numbers to
49 so we’re looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon as he hosts
the BAGS Summer BBQ.
8. Everything is proceeding smoothly with the KO competitions thanks
to organisers Hedley and John and all those still involved should note
that Finals Day will take place on Sunday September 27th – the
weekend after the Tour - at Effingham. We obviously hope all Finalists
will be available and that they will be supported by caddies and spectators
who can then attend a celebration meal in one of the local pubs. In the
meantime please make sure you stick to the deadlines so the competition
continues to go well.
9. No doubt many of you are playing 4 balls at courses you either bid
for from the Golfathon or the Progressive Auction. I’ve already
played two with BAGS colleagues and enjoyed Burhill’s New Course
which we’ll be sampling again (along with the Old) in late October
and the Dyke near Brighton which will be the Saturday venue for our South
Downs Tour next September. Don’t miss it as the views are fantastic!
Though July has produced some awful weather so far, I am hopeful that our August
and September
activities will be blessed with sunshine. Roger is working on it!
