Congratulations to Derek Smith on his first day win.

1. I don’t know why I bother listening to weather forecasts before BAGS days. Every one I heard prior to Burhill was promising a wet and windy morning with skies clearing about lunch time. Instead we had a dry, balmy morning and the only rain we had lasted all of a hole in mid afternoon.

In benign conditions therefore we had a superb day in lovely surroundings and excellent food to
round it all off in the luxuriously appointed Clubhouse. Burhill is truly a class act and we must start
saving the pennies so that it’s not 10 years again before we return.

2. It’s good to report a first time day winner and Derek Smith achieved 36 points to fill that role admirably. He had already qualified for next February’s Captain’s Bowl as a result of his Pairs KO victory (see section 7 below) so the runner up at Burhill will take that slot. His name? One Gordon Phillips who showed a welcome return to form by shooting a 35 pointer. Well done to both of you and also to Alan Spriggs on his first podium place in third position. Burhill is not an easy course and I’m sure you all had to play really well for your scores.

3. It was great to see Chris Bower playing again after a string of injuries and on the guest side, we were delighted to welcome back Chris Hodgson and George. Thanks also to Andrew who, though he had to withdraw from the golf for business reasons, still attended the Burhill dinner.

4. The leaders in the Chairman’s and Treasurer’s did not register a score - Guy was away and Bob retired ill during his Burhill round – so in the Chairman’s and Treasurer’s it’s as you were. Both however are down to play (together) at Effingham so that will be an interesting test for both. I haven’t yet seen the updated results for the par 3 but Hedley will no doubt be calculating these with a view to them appearing soon on the web site.

5. The main news since the last newsletter is that the tour of Wales was an outstanding success, helped considerably by the superb weather. Had we been there two weeks earlier, it would have been a tale of downpours and flooded greens but we picked the perfect period and enjoyed ourselves immensely. There are some BAGS days which will never be forgotten – Hunstanton, Saunton, Crail and North Berwick spring immediately to mind – and our visit to Pennard can now be added to this list. The course, like the others mentioned, is classic links but its setting above the beaches, cliffs and sea was just stunning and I defy anyone to better the appearance of the par five 16th rolling away to the ocean. The other courses we played, particularly Southerndown with its wonderful views down the coast, were lovely but Pennard was in a class of its own.

6. After two rounds it looked as if Graham, who played steadily on days 1 & 2, was going to have things all his own way but a tremendous surge by Andrew, 11 points behind as he stood on the 1st at Pennard, saw him come to within one point of catching the leader. In the end though it was Graham who triumphed so becoming only the second person (Biddy being the other) to win the Tour Cup twice. Well done Mr Wright and congratulations also to Jon (who would like it recorded he birdied the aforementioned 16th at Pennard!) on winning the Plate.

7. Details of our South Downs Tour of 2010 have already been issued and thanks to those (26 so far) who have already committed to this – we can promise you an enjoyable four days. The tour questionnaires were completed by 40 people so your committee is currently studying these and will discuss them at our next meeting in early December followed no doubt by proposed action.

8. The Knock Out Finals have all been concluded and congratulations to Ian Marshall on his second Singles win (John Davies being the Runner Up), to Hedley on beating myself (grrr!) in the Seniors Final and to Steve and Derek who beat Peter and Richard in the Pairs.

9. Mike Corliss has been chosen as the Committee’s pick for VC in 2010-11. As usual if there are any other proposals, could they please be put forward in writing before our AGM at Hankley in February.

10. Our Effingham day promises to be a lively affair with 65 people currently planning to attend. We now have just one space available, if anyone is interested in joining us as the Chairman’s, Treasurer’s and par 3 Competitions are decided.

11. Looking ahead to 2010, the Booking Form will be sent out towards the end of November. In addition we do hope you’ll be willing and able to join us at our Annual Dinner at Tyrrells, details of which have already been circulated. It will be the usual fun occasion.
