Liphook - a scene of triumph for Dave
Christie ... just!
-
It’s 11 years since we were at Liphook
so many of the 57 who turned out were new to the course. They found
some of the slickest greens in the county made more perilous by the
strong winds which brought the temperatures down, as well as making
shots to the green even more difficult than normal. The cool temperatures
did not however put off an intrepid group of 17 who, in sympathy
with our new Captain, were inspired to wear shorts despite the conditions.
It had to be explained to the multi layered Liphook veteran members
that it was not usual for BAGS members (Roger apart) to defy the
elements in this way and I know they were impressed at how committed
we are to raising money for Charity!
-
The course and conditions clearly suited the
lower handicap players from whom Dave Christie emerged the winner
with a great score of 41. This is Dave’s fourth BAGS victory ( St George’s
Hill in 02, NZ in 04 and Blackmoor in 06 being the others) and it
is the third time he has won on Countback. The unlucky player on
this occasion was Guy who followed his West Surrey victory with another
excellent performance. Richard Dakin, despite his group inadvertently
playing one hole off the wrong tee thus incurring a 2 point penalty,
finished third with 38. Well done to all of you and the subsequent
handicap reductions now mean that we have 9 members off single figures.
-
While it’s too early to have any meaningful positions
in the Chairman’s, Guy has certainly started the year well
with 83 points in his two outings. The BAGS touring circus now moves
on to the links of Littlehampton in April where with 52 members and
13 guests due to play, a good competition is in prospect. Do please
remember to get your money for this event either to me or the Bank
by the end of the week. Those who are playing only 18 holes should
deduct £8 from the £55 balance due from the 27 holers.
-
The draws for all three KO competitions have now been done
and pairings have been advised to all participants. If you are playing
in a preliminary round, this is the time to make contact with your
opponent(s) as there may be good opportunities to play in the late
afternoon once the clocks go forward this weekend. The long Easter
break may also give you a chance to play. Results should be advised
to Hedley (Singles/Pairs) or John Davies (Seniors).
-
Chris duly auctioned West Surrey and Farnham
4 balls at Liphook and we are grateful to Steve Walters, Steve Rout
and Jason for their bids. He also outlined some other innovative
money raising ideas, one of which is to sign a £10 note which if drawn from the
hat could win you a round for 4 at one of our five participating
courses. At Littlehampton there will also be the opportunity to bid
for the chance play St George’s Hill during the summer months
in one of two threeballs accompanied by a member of that Club. This
has been made possible through the generosity of Fred Milton, whose
son will be one of the hosts. So get your group (three or six) together
to play in one or both of these teams. Further details are available
from Chris.
-
You’ll have seen Roger’s note that we are extending
our Charity efforts to help two other children’s causes. The
Marsden will still get most of the money we raise (and the whole
of the proceeds from the Betchworth event and Golfathon) but your
committee decided it was appropriate this year to nominate two other
recipients, for whom the projected figures of £1000-1250 will
mean such a lot.
-
As we have run out of our third edition of
ties (the 10 year version) we have decided to consider a rerun of
the original BAGS tie which most people seem to think is the best
quality and style. This will enable those who are new to the Society
or who missed this one the first time round to have an opportunity
to purchase, hopefully at around the £15 mark. Judging by the
show of hands at Liphook indicating interest, our commitment for
the minimum quantity required should not give us any cash flow problems.
-
We hope to be in a position to publish our
list of venues for 2010 by the middle of May. The only Club now holding
us up is St George’s Hill which will not confirm an April 2010 slot
until the end of April 2009 when they know the repeat booking plans
of this year’s visitors. What we can state is that for the
fourth year in succession , we shall be able to offer all venues
(except St G and the Charity event) at a cost of £65. We are
sure this will be welcome news in these difficult times.
