Betchworth 2009 results

1. The Marsden Charity event was a huge success in all respects. Not only did we have perfect weather, despite the gloomy forecasts and the fact that the three preceding days produced a lot of heavy showers, but all the timings worked well and we even finished the evening programme one minute before the scheduled 9pm. Yes, the morning rounds are long and drawn out – with 112 players in a 4 ball format that is inevitable - but we always catch up in the afternoon Texas Scramble and we all sat down to dinner as timetabled.
2. With that number of players and good weather, it is surprising that the winning score in the morning was only 38 points but the greens were tough and pin positions difficult so the course defended itself well. The guests certainly cleaned up in the Individual positions with the leading BAGS player scoring 34 points coming in 10th.
3. Steve Walters was the man who led the BAGS field as he notched up his 5th day victory. When you add to that the fact that over the years he’s achieved 9 runners up positions and 11 thirds, you can see why he’s at the top of the Order of Merit in day events. But it got even better for Steve as he led his team Great Expectations (a very apt name as it turned out!) to the Marsden Team trophy with a total of 113 points. In this he was ably supported by Nigel Johnson with 32 points and two guests with 32 and 29. This was just enough to edge out by two points Mike Christieson’s Atlantic Warriors who were going for a third successive title. So congratulations to Steve, Nigel and the team and commiserations to Mike and Andrew who fought so hard to achieve a hat trick of wins.
4. Because the scores were lower than average, Bob was unable to close the gap on Guy in the Chairman’s but is only a whisker behind him in the Treasurer’s. Ian has produced this table for the first time this season as there are now 17 qualifiers but has also indicated two names – Nigel and Mike – who could jump to the top with a good performance at their next event. Of the four mentioned, only Nigel is playing at Crowborough so we await those results with more than normal interest. Well done also to rookie Kevin on a splendid current third place in this competition.
5. The day looks to have been a success financially though obviously there’s lots of money still coming in. Chris, ably supported by Phil Taylor, did his usual magnificent job on the auction and Keith, Gary and his team pulled in over £2K on the raffle. Hedley’s Heads & Tails produced over £500 in about 10 minutes and Ian Barrett’s hard work on the Tenners paid off with over £600 raised. Chris’ Progressive Auction saw over £2K raised during the day as BAGS men in particular recorded their bids. The courses of the Home Counties are going to be full of our members this summer!
6. As always we are indebted to all who helped on the day – Ian Marshall worked hard from 6.30 am when he took out the signs, then drove our photographer Vicky around during the morning before putting his handicap hat on to work on the results so quickly that the three whose figures had changed knew before dinner! That’s style…Ann Cattermole, Chris Little, Heather Davies and Pat Romain helped with refreshments and scorecards and Steve Secker was always there when we needed him. Last but not least we received tremendous help from Betchworth members and staff.
7. The Golfathon is due to take place on Thursday July 2nd when Roger, Hedley and generous sponsor Mike tackle one hole at each of 18 courses. This event has already raised £1800 as a result of the generosity of the fourball bids.
8. Our Crowborough Beacon 27 hole day (spaces still available for members or guests) will take place in just over four weeks so please make sure you are on time with the payment due towards the end of the month. Requests for final balances on the Wales Tour will be sent in the next few days and these will be due by July 17th our day at CB.
9. The Knock Outs are going to plan and full details of the draws in the three competitions can be seen (along shortly with the Charity results) on our web site. Please observe the KO deadlines, very important now that we are in the holiday period.
10. Acceptances for the BBQ (Sunday Aug 9th) are now coming in and it’s safe to say you’ll not eat out better for a tenner anywhere else this summer. Add to that the fact that you’re helping our Charities and are bound to have a great time with your BAGS friends and guests - it’s unmissable!
