Our Secretary, now known as "Champion", in his modest way asked Steve Little to act as your correspondent on the ground, as it were, and to report on the circumstances leading to Terry's terrific performance and reflect on another successful tour which Terry of course largely organised - for that we thank him profusely for all his hard work. Unfortunately Les was unable to join us due to injury and Peter Lambert was unable to arrive until Friday due to a family funeral. Harry was feeling unwell after the Thursday round and was taken home by Brian Longhurst who thus dropped out for Friday. We wish Harry a speedy recovery and thank Brian for his kindness. Alan Bell organised a collection from the tourers and presented Brian with a golf shirt from Stoneham as a token of our thanks - if anything typifies the spirit of BAGS, this whole chapter was it. For your information, I have gone online and looked on the website of the New Forest Gazette published on Saturday. The back page headline says "Hulme
beats Bell in ding dong battle" The inside front page makes interesting reading as there is a report that a local publican in Lyndhurst has retired to the Bahamas following a unprecedented rise in his profits following an unexpected upturn in his fortunes - he has taken early retirement. There was a separate report of several incidents during the week in and around the Forest Lodge Hotel and the adjacent Police Station. Apparently, the Police are concerned about a Scotsman seen in a Chelsea football shirt who had seemingly lost all use of his legs - they are concerned about his condition. They also report a similar incident the following evening with a reported siting of a person in a similar condition but this time the man was dressed all in pink, with a number 9 on his back, or was it a 6? You may all wish to read more details online yourselves! As for each day, Alan D. Harper (as he is now referred to by Rog) won the first day from the Silver Fox and to celebrate they became like kiddies in the chocolate factory as they cleared the whisky from the local pub almost single handedly - needless to say their second day performance was comparatively woeful and they nearly missed the cut. Barton was a fairly gentle course as the scores reflect and these despite a strong wind off the sea - the day was a disaster for Gordon who drove his buggy into the rough and in trying to get out knackered the engine and Harry had to use his mobile to get assistance - their round took 8 hours, it seemed. Then poor Gordon "lost" his only set of car keys somewhere between his car and the hotel bar. It was thought some opportunist thieves had taken the keys and thought they might nick a BMW or whatever only to find something a little less grand and threw the keys in a thicket - Gordon thought his so called friends had taken them as a prank as by dinner he was still not able to wash or change as his clothes etc were in his car. Our intrepid Secretary found them down the side of the cash register in the bar! The second day saw Terry master a difficult Brokenhurst Manor course and share the lead with Ian Barrett who had two excellent scores with Alan Bell not far behind. With the Losers (sorry Plate) trophy going to Ian Makepeace, who also won the day prize, the stage was free for the main competitors to battle through the heavy rain (for a few holes) and finish dramatically in the sunshine on a lovely course at Stoneham just outside Southampton. The revelry of celebration went well into the night. On Saturday the
Kummel Kup overflowed with some competitive golf which saw the Captain's
team prevail for the first time in the 3 years the trophy has been played
for. Finally, the hotel was excellent with high quality food and service. As well as our thanks to Terry, we must all thank Hedley and Roger for their sterling work in organising the days, scores etc. - also to Ian Barrett for organising the fun (some of it unintentional!) draw of numbered golf balls to determine who we had drawn in a sweep for the following day. Here's to next year! Best wishes Steve THE SECRETARY’S CUP – NEW FOREST TOUR SEPTEMBER 2008 QUALIFYING ROUNDS
