The
one sad thing about our day in the glorious Ashdown Forest was that only
33 BAGS members were there to enjoy it. This number together with an additional
9 guests meant that we ended up with an unusually low turnout. Though the
morning weather started unpromisingly, it was forecast to improve and duly
did, giving a glorious afternoon which, since we were playing our 18 on the
Old Course after lunch, worked out well for everybody. Some of the views
on the Old Course were fantastic with the panorama from the 12th tee (249
yds par 3 would you believe) particularly memorable.
With the course measuring 6200+yds off the yellows, not too many played to
their handicap. In fact let’s be honest only two did! Which is why
Steve Walters’ 41 points off 10 was a great achievement. He of course
was one of the gang of 16 who were at Wentworth East 15 years ago when
he was playing off 28 so his new reduction to 8 shows how much his game
has come on in the intervening years. This was Steve’s 4th day victory – for
the details of the others see the St George’s Hill programme – but
that figure does not tell the whole story as he has also had 9 runners
up and 11 third places in that period, putting him way ahead of anyone
else in consistency on Day events. He also added another pot to his growing
range as he notched the 100 round trophy. Great stuff Steve and you now
become BAGS 6th single figure golfer.
The man whose revisions put Steve into that exalted company of low handicappers
also excelled as he scored 36 points and had the bitter/sweet task of moving
himself down a shot. The forthcoming Pairs match involving the two Steves
should see some interesting golf as they try to live up to their new handicaps.
With the 100 round trophy being played for, I thought my own particular anniversary
of 200 rounds might pass unnoticed so I was extremely flattered and grateful
to receive a magnificent Magnum of champagne and a splendid commemorative
scroll which will soon have a prominent place on my wall. Thank you to
those who noticed and organised it – I know who you are! – on
behalf of BAGS. What a shame such an auspicious occasion produced such
an inauspicious score!
The Charity event is gaining even more momentum. Steve Little successfully
auctioned a couple of rounds at courses which have each generously donated
a fourball , Gary was busy selling raffle tickets and Ian, one of this
year’s Golfathoners, is holding a post Golfathon lucky draw for all
BAGS members who put £5 in the hat for a threeball playing round
with the pro at the RAC. Ian points out that multiple entries are welcome
as long as you pay £5 per time!
Meanwhile Glenn and Alexia are generously allowing the use of their home and
magnificent garden for a Charity barbecue on Sunday August 17th. The cost
per person is £10 of which at least half will go to the Marsden.
We’ve had an excellent response so far with 20 couples signing up
but the target is 30 so keep those acceptances rolling. Incidentally children
are welcome – it was good to see them there last year – and
there is no cost for them. If we do reach our target of 60 guests, that
will be at least £300 for the Charity with a highly enjoyable afternoon
thrown in.
On the team side of the Charity day, the invitations have gone out and the
event is full. If yours is one of the teams and you have not yet sent in
its name and the players’ details, please do so immediately as John
Moody and Chris are hard at work on the programme/OOP, where these details
are recorded. If you are not playing but are able to help on the day, please
contact Chris.
Clandon Regis is of course our May event and we have the challenge of the white
tees to contend with. By that time our long overdue dry sunny weather will
have ensured that the ball will run further so that should help. John Palfrey
has asked me to remind players that no towels are provided by the Club so do
bring your own! This event will also include the fourth Alan Winteridge trophy
competition.
