1. Our day at Mill Ride was attended by 56 players who experienced dry weather, though during the day the wind became stronger so keeping the scores low. The course was pleasant and the Clubhouse, though a tight squeeze for our numbers, offered a comfortable oasis. Several members, myself included, took advantage of the fact that three of the men’s showers were out of action, to use the Ladies’ facilities. Unfortunately we found no ladies there! 2. It’s always pleasant to see prizes go to either the Captain or the VC, as they have many distractions on the day and work very hard. Hedley managed to win at Clandon in May and this time it was Roger’s turn to lead the way with a 34 pointer, so recording his second day victory – the other was at Purley Downs in August 07. Maybe it’s the shorts wot won it as he was the only man brave enough to wear them in the at times chilly conditions. Well done, Rog and thanks for your increasingly amusing Disaster Trophy presentations though one has to admit the boys do try hard to give you plenty of material! 3. The Stick competitions followed in the afternoon and Keith Coughtrey achieved his second win in this event – his earlier one coming at the Wildernesse – by teeing off at the 9th with the final shot of his allotted 42. Gordon was the earlier leader by holing a putt at the 8th before calling it a day. Interestingly both of these players had indifferent morning Stableford rounds (that’s putting it gently!) yet shone in the afternoon so proving yet again that you should never give up. 4. Alan Wardrop was again in the prizes and now leads both Chairman’s and Treasurer’s. He’s never won the former trophy but this does look like his year, barring a major turnround at Hankley. 5. Much has happened since the August newsletter, probably the most surprising being my winning the Tour Cup, the same one I presented all those years ago. In the last tense round at Stoneham, Alan Bell pushed me all the way and got to within one Stableford point of my cumulative score by the end of the 18th. Looking at the Cup, as I do every waking moment (!), I see the names of many fine BAGS players and feel privileged to have joined their ranks. Interestingly out of 15 tours there have been 14 different winners, only Biddy having won it twice, so obviously my turn had arrived! 6. The New Forest tour was a great success socially (is it ever not?), in its choice of courses, its location – nice part of the country and not far away – and its overall weather, only the Stoneham day producing significant rain late on. 7. In the KOs we now have all the winners – Steve Rout beat me in the Singles, Graham and Ian triumphed over Glenn and Robin in the Pairs and Derek defeated Ian Makepeace in the Seniors. Our thanks go to John and Steve for running these competitions so efficiently. 8. The 2009 Charity season got off to a blistering start with Chris auctioning a round for 4 at Stoneham. Gary celebrated his birthday by generously paying £200 for it and he and his chosen partners are in for a treat on this superb course. Chris will also be holding another 4 ball auction at Hankley. In addition Ian Barrett will have available 49 goodie bags at £10 each containing a high quality Midgley Snelling towel (thank you Robin), three Pro V1 balls and a few other bits and pieces. Once these are sold a further £250 will go to the Marsden total. 9. It was announced at the Mill Ride dinner that BAGS membership has been offered to Jason, Kevin and Alan Spriggs, all of whom have proved their commitment to our Society over the last 3 years by playing nearly 20 rounds each. This change of status will take place from January. Additionally we welcome back Guy who has been living in France for 2 years and look forward to him being able to take a much more active part in BAGS than was possible in his previous job. 10. Steve Little has decided to leave the Committee and his role as Handicap Secretary at the end of this season. He will be replaced as HS by Ian Marshall who has liaised with him over recent weeks to ensure a smooth handover. We thank Steve for his huge contribution to BAGS both on and off the course.
11. We look forward to a well attended day at Hankley next month followed
in January by our Annual Dinner. I know from conversations at MR that
many of you are putting together your tables so please advise me when
you’ve made your arrangements. Thanks also to those who have been
quick off the mark to send in their forms for 2009. Your efficiency is
much appreciated! COMPETITION SCRATCH SCORE = 32
