Hankley Common ... Huge win for Ian Barrett
A record 68 players including 17 guests
enjoyed the delights of Hankley Common and though it was cold, the sun
was never far away and above all the day stayed dry. So the scene was
set for the final majors of the season to be settled and in two out three
trophies the previous leader was overhauled in the finishing straight.
One person who was fast out of the blocks at Hankley was Ian Barrett
and he kept up the pace throughout his 18 holes to hit a magnificent
42 points. This was 7 points ahead of the nearest BAGS competitor, Dave
Christie who reached a very creditable 35. The winning margin was only
one point behind Rod’s all time record of eight at Royal Ashdown
in March ’98 and was Ian’s second day victory this season,
the other being at Gatton in July. Ian has practised hard this year and
has been rewarded with these two victories as well as a third place on
the tour. Great stuff Mr Barrett and a well deserved cut of 4 shots is
on its way as an early Christmas present from Steve and Ian M.
In the Chairman’s Alan Wardrop’s previously commanding lead
was put at risk by Ian’s surge of 11 points up the table as he
replaced 31 points with his 42. Even this was not quite enough as his
new cumulative of 111 left him three short of Alan’s 114. So it’s
congratulations to Alan on his first win in the Chairman’s, no
mean achievement off 9.
There was not such good news
for Alan in the Treasurer’s as his
performance at Hankley saw him slip to second place behind Dave Christie
who advanced from 4th post Mill Ride to notch his first win in this competition
for the most consistent player. Well done Dave.
The par 3 also produced a turn round as Peter Robertson, leader after
Mill Ride, saw Keith Gatford, while he only scored 22 on the day at Hankley,
obviously playing the short holes very well to take the trophy from Steve
Walters. Well done Keith, another new winner of this competition.
With the par 3 in mind, it is appropriate to pay tribute to George Walden,
originator of this competition, who announced his resignation from BAGS
at the Hankley dinner. We are grateful to George, a Past Captain, for
his enormous contribution to BAGS over the years and look forward to
seeing him as a guest as frequently as he can make it to our future events.
The Past Captains’ Trophy was also played for at Hankley and it
was good to see all but one of these office holders turning out. In the
end Jim won this trophy for the first time with a score of 33 points
beating Steve Walters by a point.
Our 2009 Charity Campaign was launched at Hankley and we are grateful
to Ian for his work in collating the golf towel packs then selling over
40 of them to yield a profit of £200+ for the Marsden. The remainder
will be sold at West Surrey so make sure you get one – the towels
are of high quality. Thanks also to Chris for auctioning rounds at Barton
and Brokenhurst Manor and of course to Jon for his generosity in buying
these on the evening. Watch out for more auctions at future BAGS events.
With this season sorted, we now look ahead to 2009 and bookings are already
rolling in from many of you for the new season’s events. My thanks
to the 24 who have currently responded and I look forward to seeing the
rest of the membership renewals by the end of December.
There has been a welcome surge of bookings for the Tyrrells dinner on
January 17th and our numbers have now reached 60. Please do return your
menu choices as soon as possible and consider attending so you can spend
a memorable January evening with your BAGS friends and their guests.
Our first event of 2009 will be a welcome return to West Surrey where
of course the Captain’s Bowl will be played for. If you are a winner
(or in some cases a runner up) in any 2008 competition, you are entitled
to take part in this. Steve will be issuing a list of qualifiers in the
near future so if you are on that list, don’t miss an opportunity
to play for this prestigious trophy.
Our numbers for the Tour are now 31 and it’s good to see Biddy,
the only man to have won the Tour Cup twice, will be joining us in Wales.
At the AGM you will have the opportunity to vote for the members of the
committee to represent you in 2009. If you have any proposals, we’d
be pleased to hear them. Just to remind you that your Committee’s
choice for the new VC to serve with Roger is Keith Gatford. These and
all other roles are of course also subject to a vote by all members.
May I wish you and your families a very Happy
Christmas and a healthy New Year.
