The Gatton Manor day, while not being blessed with wall to wall sunshine, passed without rain – quite an achievement in this indifferent summer (and that’s before you see the TV pictures from Birkdale!) and an enjoyable day was had by all. The course was in good condition and the new owner, will soon initiate long overdue improvements to the changing rooms. The food however was excellent and the socialising up to the usual BAGS standard. Among the guests it was good to see Guy Simpkin, soon to relocate back to the UK, and our favourite Dutchman, Len Van Driel, over for his annual visit.
There were many stories from the old
timers on great days at Gatton on the JJ days (strange how Peter Barkham
featured in many of them!) and to commemorate JJ’s association
with the venue, our winner received a one off trophy suitably inscribed
though I shudder to think what John would have said on seeing his trophy
being won by a guy in pink trousers and shoes! The Chairman’s Trophy competition continues to be led by Jon
but web site Steve is only one behind on 108. In the par 3 Peter Robertson
leads, closely followed by Derek Smith and the Treasurer’s is virtually
a four way tie between Dave Christie, Peter R, Jon and Andy Harper with
only a point covering the four of them. Although we are still in mid
summer(?) we only have three rounds to come as the Tour does not count
for these competitions so close finishes look likely unless Addington
yields a few 40 pointers – possible especially as Peter is playing
with his teaching pro! Addington promises to be a good day out
on an excellent course with the added bonus of the Stick Competition
in the afternoon. Please remember that we need your calculations as several
people have paid their money without giving us their Stick details. Chris
needs to know the number of shots you’ll receive so he can complete
the cards for the afternoon round so do let him or me in on the secret. Thanks to those (just about everyone)
who have now paid their Tour money. We’ll have 34 with us including
regular guests Jason and Alan and look forward to our 4 day visit to
the New Forest. Do remember to team up with someone to offset the cost
involved in going down by car. Full Tour briefing notes and the OOP for
the first two days will be sent out towards the end of August. Thanks also for your payments for Glenn’s BBQ on August 17th
which will be the final event in our Charity push for this year. We are
now in the £14-15k range for money raised in 2008 and this event
will provide a suitable finale for our efforts. Glenn will soon be in
touch to ask for help in supplying salads and desserts to complement
his choice of meats. Phil Seymour surprised us all by appearing at Gatton when he was rumoured
to be in Switzerland. He has however merely postponed his departure by
a few weeks and so was able to collect his champagne at Gatton to mark
his 100th BAGS round. The KOs are proceeding well and the Quarter Finals are all due to
be finished by the end of July with the semis scheduled for an August
conclusion. This should then enable the Finals to be played shortly after
the Tour. Thanks are due to John and Steve for keeping these matches
to time. I am sure we all appreciate Roger’s amusing Disaster Trophy anecdotes at the end of our prize giving so if you are the recipient of this fine trophy at a particular event, do please remember to bring it along to the next event. If you are not playing at the next golf day, please deliver the trophy to a member of the Committee who is going to be there. So here’s a gentle reminder to the incumbent for the Addington day! If you are planning to be at Addington, see you there. If you are on holiday, enjoy it. INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION SCORES
