Clandon Regis - White tee start takes its toll!

1. Our Clandon Regis day provided perfect May weather with warm but not hot temperatures and no rain. The course, much improved since our last visit 10 years ago when it was of course comparatively new, didn’t give much away and the fact that for the first time in BAGS history we played off the whites meant that high Stableford scores were unlikely.

2. In the event the 33 points achieved by the top three scorers, produced the lowest winning total since our event at the Drift in April 1993. Hedley, playing a true Captain’s innings, on this occasion nudged out myself and Peter Robertson on Countback. It’s rare for an incumbent Captain to actually win a day event – Alan Bell is the only other example my research has turned up - so congratulations to Hedley on his achievement which brings his total day event wins to four, the others being at Wildernesse, Mannings Heath and West Surrey. With this win he also becomes the fourth holder of the Winteridge Trophy. A three way points tie has happened three times before, the last occasion being at Westerham in 2004.

3. With four rounds of the season now completed, we have sufficient qualifying players to issue a Chairman’s Trophy table from which it will be seen that Jon is making the early running, closely followed by Alan Wardrop and Peter Robertson. Alan’s big advantage is that his current throwaway score is only 27 points, a target he is likely to exceed on his next BAGS outing. The other person to watch, currently way down the list, is Steve Walters who has hit a 41 and 35 in his two outings.

4. All our thoughts and efforts now are on the forthcoming Charity event, to be held in just over three weeks. We have our usual full house of 112 players (and a reserve list) and a feast of auction, raffle and competition prizes. Chris is still looking for helpers on the day so if you are injured or otherwise unable to play, we have a variety of non energetic roles which need to be filled for the event to proceed with its usual smoothness. We are particularly grateful to Heather and Pat for their kind offer to run the drinks tent yet again and, as an experiment this year, to the two Chris’s – Little and Greatbatch – for their help in agreeing to process the results cards. If you haven’t already bought your raffle tickets and won’t be there on the day, do e mail Chris Romain to confirm you’d like some.

5. Charity Day itself is just one of the ways we raise money for this so worthy cause. The Golfathon has also established itself as a wonderful fund raiser and this year our thanks go to Jon and Ian Barrett (second year running for both) and the indefatigable (we hope!) Romain for their potential efforts on Thursday June 19th. For this event we desperately need a few more caddies to help the boys on their way and if you can help, Brian Wynn is the man to contact. Thank you in anticipation.

6. The knock out competitions are rolling along and it is good to see all players keeping to the deadlines. Steve completed the draw for the next round of the Pairs at Clandon and this, together with all other news and results, will be posted on the web site as soon as Steve Walters is around to do so. Do take a look at this site as he’s worked really hard to make it attractive, factual and up to date. Because I think Steve may be away this weekend, I’ll attach the Clandon results to this newsletter but you can normally look at or download any event’s results within 48 hours of it taking place which is a tribute to the efficiency of the two Steves.

7. If the prospect of playing Clandon again, while helping another charity appeals to you, do consider the Club’s Captains’ Golf Day to be held on Friday July 18th to help Wooden Spoon which helps disadvantaged young people. David Jackson is currently Chairman of the charity’s Surrey branch and would be delighted to hear from you if you’d like to enter a team of 4 at £50 per player.

8. As you know, we have four events in the second half of the year but Mill Ride (Oct) and Hankley (Nov) are full so do concentrate on Gatton Manor and Addington Palace if you’d like to bring a guest or indeed sign up yourself if they weren’t on your original list.

9. We look forward to welcoming Biddy back at Betchworth after his long absence.
