Charity Day at Betchworth Park 2008...
no hole in one's this year, but a superb defence of the Royal Marsden Trophy

Our Marsden Charity event was successful
despite the unfavourable weather – it was particularly unpleasant
in the morning with a storm at one point which did not help the scores
or the speed of play – but we got there in the end and recovered
the time lost in the morning to the extent that we were only 15 minutes
behind our target time of 9pm for the end of the evening proceedings.
Players were full of praise for the condition of the course despite the
morning soaking and the comments received since the event suggest that
most people had a good time.
The BAGS individual result produced
a Les Gordon victory with 36 points on Countback from Andy Bond.
This was his third Day victory – Guildford
in ’03 and Drift in ’05 being the others – and
was an excellent score in the conditions. It was not quite enough
to take him to the top of the total field but 4th out of 112 sounds
pretty good to me and we congratulate Les on his achievement.
There were no Hole in Ones this year though John Hawley and Peter
Lambert were under three feet away on two separate par 3s so no one
this year had to make the agonizing decision on his amateur status!
It’s a case of as you were in the Marsden Team Event as Mike
and Andrew’s Atlantic Warriors retained their trophy with 122
points, one more than their winning score in 2007 and with a margin
of 8 points over Graham’s Cream Cakes. This was particularly
impressive given that the weather was so much worse than last year.
They thus join the select band of two other teams who have won the
event in successive years and will no doubt be fired up to make it
a hat trick next year. The top three individuals were non BAGS members
but we particularly congratulate Pat Alder from the Middlesexers
who has been supporting the event for many years on his winning score
of 39 points.
The day looks to have been a success financially though obviously
money is still coming in. Chris did his usual magnificent job on
the auction and Gary and his team pulled in over £2K on the
raffle. As always we are indebted to all who helped on the day – David
Jackson, Robin Blackmore, Chris Little, Heather Davies and Pat Romain
in particular – as well as putting on record the considerable
support we received from Betchworth members and staff.
The Golfathon took place a week after the Charity event and our
intrepid group breezed round the Drift in even less time than usual.
Apparently Ian (he of the pink trousers) had some memorable rounds
(I’m talking about golf!) and no doubt the generous sponsors
will have added to the figures quoted above.
Jon is leading in the Chairman’s but with several players
now over the 100 points mark, it’s going to be the usual close
finish with the summer rounds an opportunity to improve your scores.
Our Gatton Manor 27 hole day is now just three weeks away and you
should by now have paid any balance owed so if you have not yet dealt
with payment, please do so. Requests for final balances on the New
Forest Tour will be sent in the next few days and these will be due
by July 15th our day at GM.
The Knock Outs are going to plan and full details of the draws
in the three competitions can be seen (along with the Charity results)
on our web site. Please observe the KO deadlines, very important
now that we are in the holiday period.
Phil Seymour has advised me that he is planning to leave our area
and set up home in Switzerland. We wish him well in this new stage
of his life and hope to see him again in the Guinness team at the
Charity event in 2009.
We were all sorry to read of Chris Greatbatch and Pat Boychuk’s
illnesses and wish them well with their respective treatments. We
hope to see them both at the summer barbie in August at Glenn’s
house. Further details on this event will be sent out in early July.
A reminder that at Addington Palace in August we’ll be holding
our Stick Competition in the afternoon. This will avoid some of the
later (more successful) participants having to complete their holes
almost by candlelight! The Past Captains’ Trophy will now be
played for at Hankley when we hope that more of that select group
will be available than has been the case in recent years.
I am delighted to report that Keith Gatford has accepted an invitation
to stand for VC for next season. He was a founder member of BAGS
all those years ago and has been a regular player (and host to many
guests) over the years.
