Due to appalling overnight weather we came very close to losing our Addington Palace event which would have been the first time a BAGS event had been cancelled on the day. A course inspection took place at 9.30 with the threat that if more rain came in the intervening period, we would lose our golf. Fortunately, apart from a heavy shower in the afternoon round, it stayed dry and by using two tee starts, reversing the day to a 9:18 format and eating later, we got in our full day’s play.

The course drained well, aided by a very strong wind which, though it kept off the rain, made high scoring very difficult. So Alan Wardrop’s winning total of 35 points was very creditable giving him his second victory of the season (he won at Effingham in February) and his third in all – the other one being over 36 holes in the blistering heat of Pyrford in August 1997. This was a great performance off 10 and Steve was impressed enough to reduce Alan to 9 so he becomes our 7th single figure player. Well done on a great achievement in very trying conditions, Alan.

This result propels Alan into a 5 point lead in the Chairman’s as he reaches 114, five more than Jon. It will be tough to catch him now as there are only two more counting events remaining but a sparkling result from one of the huge fields at either Mill Ride or Hankley could apply pressure. Andy Harper leads in the Treasurer’s but there are still some NQ’s with potentially good totals coming through, once they qualify. The par 3 sees Derek in the lead, narrowly ahead of Peter R.

The KOs are proceeding well and we already have one Finalist, Steve Rout in the Singles. The results of the other key matches should be known by the end of August or soon afterwards.

Though it’s still some time to our Mill Ride day, the New Forest Tour is only three weeks away and the 34 likely participants will be hoping for an Indian summer to counter the indifferent weather we have had so far. All those involved should by now have received the final tour briefing and you’ll get the OOPs for the opening two rounds on the Wednesday and Thursday within the next 10 days.

The Charity barbecue was a huge success, helped of course by the absence of rain. In this world there are BBQs and Ward BBQs, the difference being fantastic choice and quality of food (some of it straight from the gardens we were sitting in), lovely surroundings and of course great company. Our grateful thanks go to Glenn and Alexia for providing such a sumptuous feast and those who helped with additional food in advance and assistance on the day. The best news of all is that once again our Marsden Charity benefited to add to our already impressive total.

With food once more in mind (or on this occasion in the stomach!) the 7 course Charity meal cooked by Glenn, supported by Roger, more than satisfied the 12 recipients on an epic evening at the Corliss household. To remind you, this was auctioned by Chris at Betchworth and in the end was attended by the Romain, Corliss and Harper pairings as well as an additional six friends. Praise was indeed high for Glenn’s creativity and gastronomic achievement and a fantastic evening ensued with a significant contribution again going to the Charity.

Still on the Charity theme, many congratulations to Gill Jackson on her well deserved MBE announced this summer in the Queen’s birthday honours. Hope you get the gong from the lady herself, Gill and we look forward to seeing your husband, now fully recovered from the heart operation which has kept him out of golf this season, on the New Forest Tour.

Our thanks to those who responded so speedily with offers of help as Handicap Secretary. So far Steve has briefed Ian Marshall, by working with him on the Addington results, and plans to be in touch with Steve Walters on his return from holiday. As you all know, Steve controls the web site content and this has become an increasingly important aspect of the way we communicate with you.

Our congratulations to the Romains on their first grandchild who decided that he rather fancied being born in Lancashire, even if it meant making his first appearance 22 days earlier than scheduled! Chris duly celebrated with an excellent third place at Addington Palace.

Those who are currently unlikely to make the required minimum of four BAGS events this year are reminded that we do have two vacancies at Mill Ride. Obviously if long term injuries have been an issue, the Committee reserves the right to waive this rule in a specific season but we do have a waiting list of enthusiastic guests who would like to be offered BAGS membership and it is only fair to expect current members to take as full a role in the Society as their circumstances permit.

Our thoughts continue to be with the Greatbatch family at this very difficult time.
