1.
Our Purley
Downs day was well received by the 39 who played. We have become used to rain
in this unmemorable summer so that which fell for two or three holes was
predictable but once again we count ourselves fortunate that we didn't get a
real soaking as would have been the case earlier in the week. The course was in
good condition and is an interesting layout. We had a chance to test its mettle
in the morning nine but it obviously got the better of us as the afternoon 18
produced a CSS of only 34. 2.
The only man to play better than
36 was Roger who is having a great season playing very steady golf. Despite
starting with a blob at the opening par 3 he ground out the points (I was with
him) and ended up with a fine 37 to notch his first BAGS day victory from
Graham who made 36. He was 3rd at West Hill in March and second at Puttenham in April so where do you go from here, Roger?
Well played on a fine victory. 3.
Alan Bell with 34 won the Past
Captains' trophy from eight others, so adding to his long list of titles, all
achieved in under 60 rounds with BAGS. 4.
As we are now well into the
season, the major trophy events are developing a pattern and the Chairman's and
the Treasurer's are both now led by Roger. In the former he has a 5 point lead over
Ian Barrett with only two events to come - the tour does not count - though it
is wise to sound a cautionary note as Mike Christieson's
discard score of 26 could enable him to go top with a 33+ at either Hindhead or
Hankley. In the Treasurer's Roger leads from Peter Lambert
but this one is all about consistency every time you play so much can change in
October or November. We've now also got a ranking order in the Par 3 and it's Peter who heads the group from Andy Harper. 5.
The 6.
Thank you to Glenn and Alexia for
a superb barbecue at the end of July. It was good to see a summer social event
well attended and those who did go were rewarded with plenty of sunshine and
great hospitality. Special mention should also go to David Jackson for his work
at the Barbie and of course to the ladies who took the trouble to produce such
lovely food. 7.
Though he was not at Purley, Simon Cheung organized some wine on the table to
help us celebrate his 50th . This we did
and we are grateful to him for his kind gesture. 8.
The Irish Tour is now less than
four weeks away and the briefing should have reached the 33 involved over this
weekend. A number of you have requested buggies on certain days and these
requests will be taken into account when Steve does the OOPs
for the first two days. It seems strange that when we first considered 9.
There are two new e mail addresses
to note - Steve Bond is now steve.bond@siderise.com
and 10.
Our thoughts and best wishes are
with Cindy Medhurst as she recovers from her recent
operation and we are delighted that Robin Sewell will be in 11.
A few people have asked whether we
shall be offering BAGS embroidered clothing in the near future and the answer
is yes if there is the demand - we need an order of about 8 mixed garments to
proceed. If therefore you are interested please contact me with your
requirements and I'll get some colour options priced.
It is also our intention to make a special slipover available early next year
to mark our 15th anniversary. Looking forward to seeing many of you in the
Emerald Isle. CHAIRMAN'S

NOTE: Players must complete 3 qualifying rounds. In the
event of a tie, the HIGHEST score of the 3 is used; failing this the second;
failing this, the tie will remain. PAR 3 TROPHY 2007 - POSITIONS - POST PURLEY DOWNS

BAGS PAR 3 RESULTS - PURLEY DOWNS - 16TH AUGUST 2007
There has been a change to how this is determined. The first part stays
the same in that you score points at each Par 3 hole based on the stableford points you obtain divided by the Stroke Index
multiplied by 100. So, if you score 3 stableford
points on a hole where the Stroke Index was 9 for this competition you score
33.33 points at that hole. The more stableford points
you score and the more difficult the hole, the better your total day score
becomes. Now - we found under the old rules that there was an advantage if you
played the bare minimum number of rounds to qualify especially if you play at
courses where there are low index holes such as at Hankley
where there is one at 4. So, we are now calculating the positions each day, as
above, and awarding points within a basic scale between 1 and 50, with loadings
in terms of bonus points to "compensate" if you play, say, all 9 day events compared
with a fellow member who only plays the minimum number of 4. There are also
other adjustments such as an allowance depending in the size of the field. It
is using the same basis as the Treasurer's competition where points are awarded
in the same fashion depending on where you are placed in the day's stableford competition. This should make the Par 3 fairer but still reward the most consistent
Par 3 performer - although if you did not understand the competition before,
you sure will not now! Steve Little B.A.G.S. STABLEFORD
COMPETITION RESULT 18 HOLES - PURLEY DOWNS - 16TH AUGUST 2007
TREASURER'S TROPHY 2007 - POSITIONS POST PURLEY
NOTE: Players must complete 5 qualifying rounds. Points are
awarded depending on you position in the stableford
competition - for example, if you win in a field of 50 you receive 50 points
and if you are last you get 1 point. Your average is the total points divided
by the rounds played. There are various
adjustments made to this depending on the number of players, guests etc and an
allowance made to ensure those playing more rounds than others are not unduly
penalised for playing those extra rounds, which provides the greater risk of a
low position. The positions therefore represent and reflect the
consistency of players over the season. B.A.G.S. HANDICAP SUMMARY POST
