54 players had a real treat on the
Littlehampton links. Yes, it was difficult with the
rough particularly punishing for any shot which wandered off the fairway - in
that situation you were often lucky to find your ball, let alone have a decent lie. However as Glenn said at the presentations, this was
the most stunning day event course we've played for years. The setting was
magnificent and the holes challenging - particularly in the strong wind. In
addition, given that the weather was so lovely compared with the rain all
around us (nearby 2.
Given the difficulty of the
course, it is hardly surprising the scores were not high. As often happens in
our 27 hole competitions, the leader at lunchtime did not produce our eventual
day winner though it was a very close result. So our congratulations to Russell
who was most consistent throughout the day and finished with 50 points, shading
Steve Bond on countback. It was Russell's first BAGS
day victory though on the East Lothian tour of 2005 he won the day at 3.
In the Chairman's Roger has
managed to catch up with Ian on 104 but the battle behind them is really hotting up as four players are on 103. The man to watch
here is Steve Bond whose throwaway (ie worst ) round is 29 so potentially his next good result will
leapfrog him over the current leaders. With only one summer event (at Purley Downs) to come, there are limited high scoring
opportunities left so make the most of it in August. 4.
As the Treasurer's has a higher
level of qualifying rounds, Steve has not yet issued a league table but I am
informed by him that Steve Rout is looking well placed, no doubt partly due to
his excellent morning performance at Littlehampton. 5.
Congratulations to Ian, Steve and
Jon on their Golfathon performances on and off the course as between them they
have raised over £2250 from their sponsorship efforts. In a rash moment Ian and
Jon have even said they'd like to take part next year! Steve was more
reluctant! These efforts have taken us over the £14000 mark in our Marsden fundraising for this year. 6.
As well as the results which
follow this newsletter, Steve has compiled a comprehensive set of rules
covering all BAGS events and scenarios which will be very useful not only to
future Captains when they are sweating over results but also to members for
instance on how the Swindle receipts are
allocated. Many thanks to Steve for his time in preparing this. 7.
Our next event is a social one and
with fingers crossed for decent weather we look forward to Glenn & Alexia's
barbecue next Sunday. I am advised that 19 members (+ partners) will be
attending but there are still some who have not yet responded to their kind
invitation. Please do so without delay then the food can be organized and would
those attending bring an appropriate amount of drink. 8.
Alan tells me that the 9.
A lot of time is currently being
spent on the tour arrangements. We have unfortunately had two more withdrawals
- from Biddy and Gordon - due to injury but on the positive side we are
delighted to welcome Simon to our group which makes the total a respectable 30
members and 3 guests. All rooms in 10.
The e mail brigade will already
have received a note about our 15th year anniversary event at St
George's Hill on Thursday March 27 (just after Easter) asking you to keep the
date free if at all possible. Another one for your diary is Saturday January 19
when the next BAGS dinner is scheduled to be held again at Tyrrells
Wood.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Sunday at the barbie. B.A.G.S. STABLEFORD COMPETITION
