1.
There were some difficult journeys down to Haywards Heath, mainly due to very poor weather exacerbated
in some cases by broken down trucks. My own trip, which should have taken well
under 60 minutes, lasted about 90 and did nothing for my mood as I had all the
scorecards! Fortunately as we approached the course, the weather improved and
all thoughts of a rerun of
Worthing 2005 were put aside. 2.
One of the worst affected travellers
was Mike Christieson whose expedition from Sheen took
140 minutes. Fairly early in his journey he realized that going out first would
give him quite a problem so a phone call to Glenn allowed him to go half way
down the field. Was he stressed? If he was, it had all disappeared by the time
he played his afternoon 18 and ran in an impressive 37 pointer to win the day
and to become the third winner of the Winteridge
trophy. This was Mike's second day victory, the previous one occurring at The Addington in March '04. We all know he hits a long ball and
on this occasion, not only were those drives straight but he must also have
read the slower greens (soaked by the recent rain) better than most of us. Well
done Mike and I'm sure your week was further enhanced
by Drogba's last minute Cup Final goal. Hope your
journey up to Wembley was better than to Haywards! 3.
There was the usual discussion during the day about whether
the 9:18 format is better than the 18:9 version. Last
time we had a vote (at the AGM in 2006) the votes were about even. Morning
traffic and afternoon fatigue seem to be the main arguments against and course
familiarity and an extended warm up are the reasons most offered by the pro
camp. To keep both factions happy, we'll continue to offer two 9:18 events each
summer, ideally in May and August. 4.
As we've now played the first four events of the new season,
Steve has produced an interim Chairman's Trophy listing and though there are
still many NQs (three rounds being the minimum
requirement) we have a 'leader in the Clubhouse' named Roger with a current
score of 101. Though this is well below the figure which will in due course win
this Competition, it's nice to have the scores in the bag as you can always
build on those. Well done also to rookie Ian Barrett who has three scores of
30+. Steve has not yet issued a Treasurer's listing as there would be even more
NQs (four scores are required) but his unofficial
findings are that it is currently too close to call. 5.
With little over a week until the first deadline for the
Singles KOs, your matches should either have been played or at least arranged.
Most of the Pairs matches, which are much more difficult to organise,
have a deadline of the end of June so do get those dates in the diary as soon
as you can and let Alan know what you've arranged so he can cross you off the
list. 6.
It's good to report that Jim and Keith emerged unscathed
(and with creditable scores) in their first outings since their operations in
the winter and Harry goes from strength to strength. However to be on the safe
side we've reserved buggies for the 'foot brigade' at the Betchworth Charity
event next month as the walking there can be tough on a 27 hole day. Making a
welcome return to BAGS on that day - though sadly in a non playing capacity -
will be Gordon whose upper arm problems are still giving cause for concern. We
hope to get an update on his scan well before Charity Day. 7.
Talking of which our 28 four man teams are all in the
starting blocks ready to launch their challenge for the Marsden
trophy competition. John Moody has been working very hard designing and writing
a bumper programme which, once printed by Steve, will
be sent out soon with the OOP to all teams. Chris is continuing to build his
list of auction items and keeps adding to his raffle haul so all is nearly
ready for another great day of Charity golf. We've already raised a useful
total with sales of raffle tickets, auctions of golf rounds and paid for
entries to the Golfathon points competition but the
final stretch is always the most frenetic. Your Charity committee is even
holding a meeting on Bank Holiday Monday to ensure things
continue to fall into place! 8.
As we approach the second half of our year, can I remind you
that the July event on the links of Littlehampton is
a 27 hole competition though there will be
intermediate prizes for the best 9 and 18. Many of those who normally opt for
an afternoon 18, prefer on this occasion to play for
the whole day so if you are usually one of the pm ers,
could I ask you to reconfirm your wishes on this occasion so I can include you
in the appropriate section of the OOP. The course by the way is flat and the
turf springy! 53 people are currently planning to visit the coast with us that
day and I'm sure they'll enjoy the trip. B.A.G.S. STABLEFORD COMPETITION
RESULT 18 HOLES HAYWARDS HEATH - 17TH MAY 2007
CHAIRMAN'S
TROPHY 2007 CURRENT STANDINGS POST HAYWARDS HEATH
NOTE:
Players must complete 3 qualifying rounds. In the event of a tie, the HIGHEST
score of the 3 is used; failing this the second; failing this, the tie will
remain. BAGS
PAR 3 RESULTS HAYWARDS HEATH 17TH MAY 2007
There has been a change to how this
is determined. The first part stays the same in that you score points at each
Par 3 hole based on the stableford points you obtain
divided by the Stroke Index multiplied by 100. So, if you score 3 stableford points on a hole where the Stroke Index was 9
for this competition you score 33.33 points at that hole. The more stableford points you score and the more difficult the
hole, the better your total day score becomes. Now - we found under the old rules that
there was an advantage if you played the bare minimum number of rounds to
qualify especially if you play at courses where there are low index holes such
as at Hankley where there is one at 4. So, we are now
calculating the positions each day, as above, and awarding points within a
basic scale between 1 and 50, with loadings in terms of bonus points to
"compensate" if you play, say, all 9 day events compared with a fellow member
who only plays the minimum number of 4. There are also other adjustments such
as an allowance depending in the size of the field. It is using the same basis
as the Treasurer's competition where points are awarded in the same fashion
depending on where you are placed in the day's stableford
competition. This should make the Par 3 fairer but
still reward the most consistent Par 3 performer - although if you did not
understand the competition before, you sure will not now! I shall issue this result sheet after
each day event and once we get beyond the Charity Day when a good number will
have completed the required number of qualifying rounds, I shall provide a
summary of where you are in the annual competition and provide a further
explanation. Steve Little B.A.G.S.
