Glenn had a dream start as Captain
at West Hill. His drive went right down the middle, he was only denied 3rd
place in the main competition on Countback and his
Captain's Challenge defeated 46 of the field so transferring to them a £92
Charity obligation. His performance was all the more impressive when we take
into account the fact that he had only climbed off a flight from the US West
Coast less than 24 hours earlier. Add to that the fact that whereas the
temperatures on his trip were in the 70s, West Hill provided one of the coldest
golf days (when you take the wind chill into account) BAGS have ever
experienced. I wonder how many other BAGS Captains have had their handicap
reduced on their first playing day in office. Well done Glenn! 2.
The conditions led to the lowest
winning score since Steve Walters' 34 at Stoke Poges
(it was bitterly cold then too!) in March 1996 as Peter Lambert duplicated that
score in what must have been a really gutsy performance. West Hill plays long,
with a number of daunting par 4s, and that's before taking the wind into
account. This was Peter's 6th BAGS victory which takes him level
with Graham and one ahead of Chris Romain and Alan
Bell (who has achieved five day victories not the four I stated in the last
newsletter). It's interesting that the all time lowest winning BAGS score was
Peter's 33 on the Wentworth Edinburgh course in March 1994 so he obviously specialises in difficult assignments. Congratulations
Peter. When producing the results Steve mentioned that he could not recall a
previous CSS as low as 31. 3.
Other solid performances were by
Roger (also on the 4.
Our thanks to those who helped
kick start the Marsden fund raising by buying heavily
discounted golf balls from the Barrett collection, bought raffle tickets from
Gary, contributed to the Captain's Challenge (thank you Glenn for generously
adding to this with some of your Vegas winnings) and for bidding so
energetically during Chris' auction for rounds at the Army and Hindhead. 5.
The Knock Out draws were carried
out by Alan during the afternoon and these will be issued within the next few
days. As usual the advice is to make contact with your opponent(s) at an early
stage to establish when they are available. Believe it or not, the warmer
weather is on its way and the lighter evenings should give ample opportunity
for your matches. 6.
At the moment it's too early to
have meaningful results or tables for the Chairman's or the Treasurer's but
Steve has issued the par 3 standings at West Hill, partly so that members get
an opportunity to understand the new basis for calculation of the standings.
It's good to see Steve Bond with a good performance though these figures come
with a health warning that your position can go down as well as up, depending
on future events! 7.
Thanks to those involved on the
tour for responding so enthusiastically to the 'Gala Dinner' idea put forward
by Andrew for the evening of Friday September 14th. Based on
comments from Biddy and Steve W additional to Andrew's, it sounds a great venue
with wonderful views nearby over the cliffs and sea below. Steve also talked of
magnificent sunsets so we'll keep our fingers crossed that there'll be one to
see that evening! 8.
You'll be pleased to know that
Harry's foot is improving and had weather conditions at West Hill permitted the
use of buggies, he would have tried 9 holes. We hope he'll be able to do that
instead at Puttenham. In the meantime Gordon is sadly
out of action until June with a shoulder problem but whether or not he's fit
enough to play at Betchworth, he'll be at the Charity dinner and we wish him a
speedy recovery in the meantime. 9.
I'm still not yet able to publish the whole of
next year's programme as St George's Hill, our choice
for the 15 year anniversary event in March, have still not confirmed our
preferred date of March 27th but I'm hoping this will be tied up by Easter.
However just to whet your appetites, we've got Effingham in February, the bunkerless 10.
Attention now switches to the
first of our summer events in a few weeks time at Puttenham
and you are reminded that the balance is due by April 1st. B.A.G.S. STABLEFORD COMPETITION RESULT 18 HOLESWEST HILL - 20TH MARCH 2007
