1. Our AGM meeting at Kingswood was held after a period of rainy weather though fortunately the day itself was dry. Unsurprisingly therefore if you found yourself off the fairway in the rough, you were likely to find yourself in more trouble than usual. 2. Obviously this was not a problem encountered very often by Alan Bell, our retiring Captain as he led from the front with 37 points to score his fourth day victory. At the same time he became the first incumbent Captain to win the Captain's Bowl with a net Strokeplay score of 71. This was the only 'major' (KOs excepted) which Alan has not yet won so he becomes the only player to have held the Chairman's, Treasurer's, Secretary's, Stick and the Bowl. Your next task Alan is to attempt to win those in the same year but this achievement will do nicely in the meantime and we congratulate you on ending your Captaincy on such a high note. 3. We also congratulate Stuart on an excellent day after the terrible start of being involved in a car accident - thankfully he was uninjured. To suffer that start then come so close to winning the day and the Captain's showed great strength of character and concentration. Hope the car is OK soon Stuart - we know you are! 4. We had a successful AGM after the prizegiving which saw Glenn and Hedley confirmed as the new Captain and VC. Details of Glenn's Captain's Challenge are in the West Hill OOP and the Club are already preparing the first fairway for his drive in! 5. At the AGM it was announced that our 15th anniversary event next year will be held at St George's Hill. The anticipated date is Thursday March 27th (just after the Easter weekend) and the cost will be subsidised by BAGS to bring it down to £80. It is hoped to confirm this date and all others for 2008 within the next four weeks so you can arrange to attend as many of our events as possible. Apart from in March the day event cost will again be held at £65 (Charity £66) which those at the AGM agreed represented excellent value for what was on offer. 6. Our 2008 tour is almost certain to be to Hampshire, the final decision to be made after four of us visit the area in early April. The proposed hotel in Lyndhurst is having a major refurb. at the moment so we just want to check out that it's up to the standards of a BAGS tour. 7. The KO draws will be made by Alan and his team at West Hill so if you've not yet committed and wish to take part an e mail will suffice - there's no entry fee. 8. With the KOs and communication between members in mind, it's time to issue the new list of members with their contact details. I'll do this in two stages - a first draft so you can check whether your details are correct, then a revised version. Look out for this within the next ten days. 9. John Hartnett has not renewed his membership, partly due to continuing angina problems, and we wish him a speedy improvement in his health. John was our first winner at Wentworth East in March 1993 and in thanking him for his loyalty to BAGS over the years since, we hope we'll see him as a guest on the odd occasion. 10. As a result we are 60 members with a small waiting list. We always encourage those on this to play as a guest as often as possible so they can get to know us and we them. This has been a system which has worked pretty well over the years. 11. A record 72 members and their partners enjoyed the Annual Dinner at Tyrrells in January. We have pencilled in Saturday 20th January 2008 for the next one and await confirmation from the Club. 12. Our thanks to Ian Barrett for his work in making available bags of nearly new branded balls at £5 a dozen, the proceeds to go to our Marsden Charity fund. I understand Ian sold 7 bags at Kingswood and with a higher turnout at West Hill, there may well be others keen to bag a bargain. 13. With the committee's approval, Steve has slightly changed the par 3 rules to favour those who play more in the season. This is explained in his note following this newsletter. 14. Bookings for future events have been very brisk and we are full for Hindhead, Hankley and the Charity event. If you wish to bring a guest to any other event, please contact me. B.A.G.S. BAGS PAR 3 RESULTS KINGSWOOD 19TH FEBRUARY 2007
There has been a change to how this is determined. The first part stays the same in that you score points at each Par 3 hole based on the stableford points you obtain divided by the Stroke Index multiplied by 100. So, in Glenn's case he scored 3 stableford points on hole number 3 at Kingswood where the Stroke Index was 9 - therefore he scores 33.33 points at that hole. The more stableford points you score and the more difficult the hole, the better your total day score becomes.
Now - we found under the old rules that there was an advantage if you played the bare minimum number of rounds to qualify especially if you play at courses where there are low index holes such as at Hankley where there is one at 4. So, we are now calculating the positions each day, as above, and awarding points within a basic scale between 1 and 50, with loadings in terms of bonus points to "compensate" if you play, say, all 9 day events compared with a fellow member who only plays the minimum number of 4. There are also other adjustments such as an allowance depending in the size of the field. It is using the same basis as the Treasurer's competition where points are awarded in the same fashion depending on where you are placed in the day's stableford competition.
This should make the Par 3 fairer but still reward the most consistent Par 3 performer - although if you did not understand the competition before, you sure will not now! I will always be happy to explain it over a beer!
I shall issue this result sheet after each day event and once we get beyond the Charity Day when a good number will have completed the required number of qualifying rounds, I shall provide a summary of where you are in the annual competition and provide a further explanation.
