1993 - 2000

    • It was sad that our Hindhead day was marred by persistent drizzle and poor visibility which prevented us from fully appreciating the autumn colours on this stunning course. It was however still good to be there enjoying the challenge of the varied holes. Conditions were not easy and only two BAGS members played to their handicap, as Ian Marshall edged out Dave Christie on Countback with a score of 36. Hindhead is a course of two different halves and Ian’s golf reflected that as, after a first nine of 13 points he played some wonderful golf – four pars and a birdie in successive holes – to hit a back nine of 23. A great performance Ian and a delight to play in your group. Incidentally this was the second event in succession I had played in the same group as the winner so if anyone wants to join me at Hankley, there will be a small consideration……!
    • Ian’s winning score puts him 2nd to Roger in the Chairman’s and we can now get out the crystal ball to see what the various contenders have to do to overhaul him at Hankley. Assuming Roger scores no more than 34 later this month, Ian would need a 38 to seal it whereas Terry (with the highest score of 42) needs a 35. Mike would have only needed a 33 but is out through injury. All this of course assumes benign conditions at Hankley, never an easy course to score well on and history is on Roger’s side as more often than not, the leader before the last event tends to stay there.
    • In the Treasurer’s, as Steve said in his earlier notes, Roger has a commanding lead but an off day at HC could put him within range of one of the NQs, Alan Bell and Ian M being the likeliest to benefit.
    • The par 3 is very tight with Peter L and Andy H, virtually joined at the hip but this competition traditionally throws up an injury time change and this could well happen again as a result of the par 3 at HC with a low SI of 4.
    • Though it is now over 2 months ago, our Irish Tour will take far longer than that to disappear from our memories. The weather was great, the courses excellent – particularly Cork (as Mike will confirm!) – and the hotel comfortable with good food.  The Tour Cup went by the narrowest of margins to Jon – it really was the last putt – from Hedley who was leading up to the last round at Kinsale. So a new name goes on the trophy and well done both of you on a titanic struggle. Congratulations also to Russell on his win in the Plate. One of these days we may even get his name engraved on the trophy, if Graham ever lets me have back the one he won in Devon! Hint, hint!
    • We cannot leave Ireland without mentioning the best meal most of us have ever had, kindly arranged for us by Andrew at Otto’s along the coast from Kinsale.  The food and the setting were sublime and who will ever forget seeing those stars so clearly etched against the jet black sky, a phenomenon which only occurs when you’re a long way from the urban lights. To give a flavour of the Otto’s evening, some photos are attached with the Chairman in particular in full flow!
    • The KOs are now over for another season (though I haven’t yet heard the result of the Seniors Final between Russell and Rod) and congratulations to double winner Mike Christieson on his victory in the Singles and Pairs (with Nigel) and Steve Little in the Plate.
    • As we look ahead to events after Hankley, our January meeting will be at Tyrrells though in their dining room rather than on the golf course. You’ll have received your invitation and some have already responded but we need many more in order the recreate that special BAGS atmosphere so do get busy organising tables with your friends.
    • You should also by now have seen next year’s list of events as it was e mailed to you the other day together with details of the New Forest Tour. Our AGM meeting is at Effingham when Roger Boychuk will be nominated to be Hedley’s VC in the coming season. As with all committee positions, it is possible to put forward people willing to stand though any names must be communicated to myself at least a week before the event in February.
    • We look forward as always to Hankley but particularly this year as it marks the return of Gordon who has missed a whole season’s golf through injury. Of those who will not be there, we wish a speedy recovery to Mike and Harry after their recent operations and to Robin B and Biddy both of whom are still sidelined by persistent injuries. The Phil Taylor Rules presentation should add an extra dimension to what is always an entertaining evening.
    • Alan Bell has pointed out that the New Year marks the point at which certain drivers become illegal. You can check whether yours is one of them by going to the R&A web site www.randa.org

There has been a change to how this is determined. The first part stays the same in that you score points at each Par 3 hole based on the stableford points you obtain divided by the Stroke Index multiplied by 100. So, if you score 3 stableford points on a hole where the Stroke Index was 9 for this competition you score 33.33 points at that hole. The more stableford points you score and the more difficult the hole, the better your total day score becomes.

Now - we found under the old rules that there was an advantage if you played the bare minimum number of rounds to qualify especially if you play at courses where there are low index holes such as at Hankley where there is one at 4. So, we are now calculating the positions each day, as above, and awarding points within a basic scale between 1 and 50, with loadings in terms of bonus points to "compensate" if you play, say, all 9 day events compared with a fellow member who only plays the minimum number of 4. There are also other adjustments such as an allowance depending in the size of the field. It is using the same basis as the Treasurer's competition where points are awarded in the same fashion depending on where you are placed in the day's stableford competition.

This should make the Par 3 fairer but still reward the most consistent Par 3 performer - although if you did not understand the competition before, you sure will not now!

NOTE: Players must complete 5 qualifying rounds. Points are awarded depending on you position in the stableford competition - for example, if you win in a field of 50 you receive 50 points and if you are last you get 1 point. Your average is the total points divided by the rounds played.  There are various adjustments made to this depending on the number of players, guests etc and an allowance made to ensure those playing more rounds than others are not unduly penalised for playing those extra rounds, which provides the greater risk of a low position.

The positions therefore represent and reflect the consistency of players over the season.
