Hankley
Common 2007
and the years majors can be found below...
1.
Though there wasn't the
sunshine which graced our last two November visits to Hankley,
we had a mild day with no wind and only a light drizzle for the early starters
(oh the benefits of being at the back!). Everyone again seemed to appreciate
the course, the Clubhouse, the welcome and the food and it was only sad that
though we had 58 people out, 13 were guests which means that the Hankley experience was missed by 15 BAGS members. Better
luck (or planning!) next year chaps. 2.
Scores of 40 have been
rare this season - only three prior to Hankley - so
to achieve that off 7 is an excellent show. Well done therefore to Graham on
achieving that level of performance which has been duly rewarded by Steve with
a cut to 6. He's now our third player to reach those dizzy heights (or is it
depths?). This was Graham's 7th day victory and it's hard to imagine
that he played off 18 when he first joined our Society in 1995. 3.
I said in the post Hindhead newsletter that Terry needed a 35 at Hankley to take him past Roger in the Chairman's with 109,
his 42 at Betchworth counting in any tie break. This he duly did but the
projection did not take into account a 10 point swing from Graham whose 40 took
the place of a 30 throwaway so catapulting him to 112. He's slipping a bit though
as when he won it last year he got 115 and 113 in 2004! He thus becomes the
first player to win a hat trick of Chairman's. While recognising
this achievement, our commiserations go to Roger who led this event for most of
the season. 4.
Poor Roger also slipped
back in the Treasurer's. On this occasion it was Alan Bell who took the title
for the second time, having won it previously in his Golden Year of 2005. Peter
Lambert came through strongly to steal second place by a decimal point from
Roger. Well done to these three in this most exacting of competitions. 5.
Peter took the par 3
title from Andy Harper to cap a good season for himself. Andy's consolation is
that he'll play in the Captain's Bowl as Peter had already qualified for this
as a result of his West Hill victory in March. 6.
Steve has prepared a list
of the CB qualifiers. Obviously there are some duplications
but runners up can be promoted in these circumstances. We'll await the return
of the Booking Forms to see who's available before issuing the list of those
privileged to take part in this Winners' Competition. 7.
Congratulations to Rod
who won his Seniors Final against Russell. 8.
Thanks to those who have
dealt with their paperwork for the various events of next year. After a slow
start, bookings are now coming in for the Annual Dinner and we hope to have
30-35 couples there on the night. I hope to send out the menus within the first
half of December so you can your choices out of the way before Christmas sets
in. Bookings are brisk for the Golf Days of 2008 and it is good to see that so
far everyone is planning to attend our 15th anniversary event. 9.
We have sent out Booking
Forms to our regular guests to give them an option to book direct in case their
usual host is not available. We are aware that many of them would like to
become BAGS members but continue to take the view that membership should be
restricted to 60 though there is no limit on the number of events which a guest
may attend. In assessing a guest's credentials for potential membership, the number
of events played over the years is an important (but not the sole) criterion.
In certain circumstances they can also come on Tour. 10.
Next week the Charity
Committee is due to have its first meeting for the 2008 event. We have already
got some income from those who have strayed into the Captain's Bunker at the
various events and as last year Chris is planning to auction opportunities to
play at many attractive courses during the early events of 2008. 11.
Our thanks to Chris for organising the Phil Taylor Rules Presentation at Hankley. This was as entertaining as we all hoped and there
were some interesting questions and scenarios put forward by those present. 12.
As we approach the end of
the year, may I wish you a very Happy Christmas with your families and thank
you for helping to make BAGS such a successful Golf Society.
The spirit and friendly atmosphere at our events is well known and I look
forward to sharing more enjoyable occasions with you all in 2008. HANKLEY

TROPHY 2007 FINAL STANDINGS POST HANKLEY COMMON
NOTE:
Players must complete 3 qualifying rounds. In the event of a tie, the HIGHEST
score of the 3 is used; failing this the second; failing this, the tie will
remain. TREASURER'S
TROPHY 2007 - FINAL POSITIONS POST HANKLEY COMMON
NOTE:
Players must complete 5 qualifying rounds. Points are awarded depending on you
position in the stableford competition - for example,
if you win in a field of 50 you receive 50 points and if you are last you get 1
point. Your average is the total points divided by the rounds played. There are various adjustments made to this
depending on the number of players, guests etc and an allowance made to ensure
those playing more rounds than others are not unduly penalised for playing
those extra rounds, which provides the greater risk of a low position. The
positions therefore represent and reflect the consistency of players over the
season. B.A.G.S CAPTAIN'S BOWL
