1. Our Marsden Charity event went extremely well helped in part by the generally favourable weather, the promised rain failing to materialise in any significant amounts. The course at Betchworth was in excellent condition and the yellow tees were well back so that the yardage was true to the cards. That was just as well as on the 8th we had a hole in one, in itself a notable achievement but when there is a car being offered as a prize, it does bring even more excitement to the occasion. R&A rules require that any player in this happy position has to decide whether to accept such a prize, as the value of the Mini Cooper, around £15000, infringes one's amateur status and requires you to play off scratch for two years. Fortunately for Adam Romain, for it was he, his Mum and Dad were around on the day, to give any necessary advice. I'm told the decision did not take long! 2. So it was a great day for the Romain family as Pat was actually helping serve drinks to players finishing the 7th and 17th and was therefore aware that something rather memorable was happening on the next hole! In addition Peter Barkham's Cooper Cobham team were playing the adjacent 14th when the ball went in the hole on the 8th so the sale of the brand new car was duly recorded! How fitting that a prize like this should go to the youngest of the 112 players and I'm sure we are all delighted that Adam's first ace should be achieved at an event in which his Dad is so involved. 3. TT didn't do too badly either as his 42 pointer propelled him to the top of the leader board ensuring that the Taylor family will be eating Harrods groceries for at least the next few days. This was Terry's second BAGS win (the first was at Hever in August 2001) and shows how well he has recovered from his shoulder operation to fix a problem which kept him out of golf for a whole season. To beat a field of 111 other players is quite an achievement Terry and the only person who may not be as thrilled is your Pairs partner Stuart as you attempt on a reduced handicap to retain the title you won last year! I'm sure on this form you can live with it. 4. Mike Christieson also had a good day as he finished second in the Individual and led his team Atlantic Warriors to victory in the Marsden Trophy with 121 points. Just to show it was no flash in the pan, Mike's team also won the Texas over holes 1-9 though by the closest of margins. 5. As far as the amount raised for the Marsden is concerned, we do not of course yet have a final figure but the raffle proceeds this year broke through the £2000 barrier, thanks particularly to a Herculean effort on the day by Gary, and Chris' auction produced close to £6000. When added to the £1600 donation from RBS and the generous novelty hole sponsorships - all 18 were covered this year for the first time - we are comfortably over the five figure mark even before the Golfathon. Well done everyone who worked so hard to make the day such a success, in particular Chris and his committee, John Moody (great programme), Ian (sponsorships) and non-playing Steve and Gordon for help on the day. Finally thanks to all BAGS members for your continued generosity over the years which has now produced close to £150000 for this so worthy cause. 6. Jon, Ian and Steve will be strutting their stuff on Thursday at the Drift Golfathon when they aim to increase our Marsden figure still further. Thanks to those caddies who have volunteered to help the likely lads in their challenge and even if you can't manage to attend during the day, I'm sure there'll be a mini celebration in the bar around 6pm to which all members are invited. Let's hope the weather is pleasant without being too warm. 7. It's not golf but many congratulations to Simon who finished the London marathon yet again and raised a good amount for a children's charity. He modestly points out that it was his slowest time but finishing is the big thing Simon and it was the warmest temperature for the London in the race's history. 8. Littlehampton in July continues to attract new participants and we now have a net five extra players from the original OOP for the 27 holes competition on this links course. August sees us at Purley Downs and the big event of September is the Irish Tour to Cork. 9. Ian still leads in the Chairman's with 104 points but Mike, Hedley and Peter are only one point behind. The next two summer events offer great opportunities to increase your score. 10. Check those KO deadlines carefully as the end of June approaches. One memorable Pairs match last week between the McCaffery/Walters and Wright/Sellers duos produced no less than 7 birdies. That's great golf and what a shame one Pair had to lose..
