1. Playing a 27 hole competition is an increasingly severe test of stamina, given that our average age is constantly on the march. However in the conditions at Blackmoor, though not quite as hot as earlier in the week, it was tough to walk round let alone score well. It certainly made one appreciate the mental and physical strength of players in the Hoylake Open with 72 holes to negotiate and they're playing for more than a £5 Swindle! 2. In the circumstances it was not surprising that scores were not in the 40+ category but the always-consistent Dave Christie scored 22 points on his final 9 to overturn a deficit of 4 points after the morning round to beat Robin Blackmore on countback with a final points tally of 56 for the twenty seven holes. With the lowest BAGS handicap in the field, that's quite a performance and we congratulate Dave on his second day victory, the previous one being at St George's Hill in 2004. Special mention also to Steve Bond on his best ever BAGS performance in 4th place. 3. Keen observers of the attached figures (and I know there are not many!) will notice that Dave's handicap has not been reduced, the reason being that though this was a 27 hole competition, only the morning results were used by Steve as the basis for any handicap changes and counting scores in the Chairman's though the day's rankings were obviously taken for the Treasurer's. As the CSS for the morning round was 35, Dave's 34 put him in the buffer zone leaving his handicap unchanged. 4. It is however all change in the Chairman's as Ian Sellers, in another solid showing, leapt over Graham (bet you enjoyed that!) to take the lead with 112 points. With only three counting rounds to go, it's important to look at the third best score of those in the top ten as the lower that score, the greater the increase in the event of a good performance. On that basis Andy, Glenn and Robin might attract good Romain odds but Ian's three point lead looks pretty solid at the moment. With the top five all playing at Worthing in August, there's a good opportunity for someone to take advantage of the current dry conditions. 5. Though Graham has lost the lead in the Chairman's, he heads the Treasurer's Competition from Andy and Ian. Remember though a poor performance, even in one event, can push you down the table, so each time you play you are at risk though that's not been a problem for Graham so far, such has been his consistency. In the par 3, Peter Barkham leads from Hedley with Peter R shadowing him closely. Sadly Peter has joined our injury list and we hope he makes a swift enough recovery to join his two guests at Worthing. We are also still keeping our fingers crossed that Ian, Harry and Biddy will be able to join us for the Devon tour and John Smalley naturally remains in our thoughts. 6. Thanks to all those who have responded with their final payment for Devon. It will be interesting to play under the new experimental format of a cut at the end of the first two days, enabling the two halves to compete at Churston for their own prizes after which the tour climaxes on the main Dartmouth course with an England vs Rest of the World (using Mr Little's stretched criteria!) contest on day 4. As we understand that there's a fair amount of walking between green and tee on this course, we've taken the precaution of provisionally reserving buggies for everyone - it is the last day after all!. Should you wish to walk, we'll be asking for opt out declarations in the tour briefing notes which will be issued next month. 7. The Singles KOs are now down to the last seven, John Davies having already reached the semis. The Seniors have their own deadline of next Monday and the Pairs matches must be completed by August 10th. If you are still in these competitions, please keep the date of October 1st clear in your diary so we can hold a true Finals Day. 8. Please remember that if you are playing Worthing, I need your Sticks shots allowance calculated (guests as well please). If like me you have a birthday between now and then, allow for that as it's another .25 towards your allowance!! 9. We are looking forward to Alan and Lynda's party on August 12th and are sure that the swimming pool will be well used if the weather stays like this but please in the interests of us all can we have some meaningful rain (preferably overnight) between now and then!

Captain's Bowl qualifiers in Bold CHAIRMAN'S TROPHY 2006 CURRENT STANDINGS POST BLACKMOOR
NOTE: Players must complete 3 qualifying rounds. In the event of a tie the HIGHEST score of the 3 is used; failing this the second; failing this, the tie will remain.
TREASURER'S TROPHY 2006 - POSITIONS POST BLACKMOOR
NOTE: Players must complete 5 qualifying rounds. Points are awarded depending on you position in the stableford competition - for example, if you win in a field of 50 you receive 50 points and if you are last you get 1 point. Your average is the total points divided by the rounds played. There are various adjustments made to this depending on the number of players, guests etc and an allowance made to ensure those playing more rounds than others are not unduly penalised for playing those extra rounds, which provides the greater risk of a low position.
The positions therefore represent and reflect the consistency of players over the season.
