Worthing 2006

1.        All the weather forecasts pointed to another Worthing washout so it was especially enjoyable to play both courses in such pleasant weather. In fact when we moved to the Upper Course after a delightful lunch, the views were even better in the warm August sunshine. However you played on the day, the sight of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters way up the coast was truly memorable and for me ranked along with memories of Hunstanton and North Berwick . It was only sad that as few as 28 members were there to share the experience though a high guest turnout pushed our numbers up to 41.

2.        Most people found the Lower course difficult which is why it it is even more impressive that Graham came in with a 40 pointer off a nine (now eight!) handicap. This was a great performance, made even better by his score of five birdies, three of them in succession on the (for most people) more difficult back 9. This takes Graham to a record six day victories in addition to the other trophies he has won and we warmly congratulate him on this achievement.

3.        In the Stick Competition held on the shorter but spectacular Upper course, Alan Bell repeated his achievement of two years ago at New Zealand in finishing the ninth despite a double bogey on that hole. Over excitement Alan?!

4.        While the past Captains' Competition had a limited entry this year, it was good to see Stuart make a welcome return to form to win by a six shot margin. Rumour has it that he had played six holes before he realised that he was playing in a Strokeplay as well as a Stableford Competition!

5.        In the Chairman's Graham has now played catch up with Ian and leads again by one point on 113. Behind them is Andy on 107. There are now only two more counting rounds (Wildernesse and Hankley) this season so it will need some high scoring to catch the leaders. Remember that in the event of a tie over the best three rounds, the highest single score would determine the winner.

6.        Graham also has a useful lead over Andy in the Treasurer's though of course a poor performance in this competition can bring you down a few places.

7.        In the par 3, Peter Barkham is holding on to his lead though Hedley and Peter R are not far behind.

8.        In the KOs , we are now at the semi final stage in all four competitions and well done to Messrs, Davies, Hawley, Little, Romain and Smillie on still each being involved in two of these. We hope that Sunday October 1st will see an excellent Finals Day at Effingham with offers of help in caddying greatly appreciated. Clearly however that schedule is dependant on each match having a different set of players so Alan will be watching the semis results with keen interest.

9.        The Devon Tour is now only just over two weeks away and though our numbers will be down on the last two years attendance, I am sure the remaining 32 will have a great time. The final briefing has now been sent to everyone and should be read carefully by those involved.

10.      This season has unfortunately seen more cancellations of bookings than has previously been the case. While some of these have been due to injuries or illness, an unwelcome development has been the trend towards advising me quite late on of a cancellation due to holiday arrangements. While I naturally accept that these have been made after you have put your name down well in advance for a specific BAGS event, I do not think it unreasonable to ask that you advise me by e mail of your change in plans as soon as you know they will affect your BAGS booking. In some recent cases, it seems to have required the issue of an event's OOP to remind you of the potential clash and this does cause unnecessary extra work on my part. Your future attention to this request would be appreciated.

11.      Though the Worthing results were issued a week ago, I am advised that some recipients were unable to open them due to virus warnings, no doubt due to the fact that they were forwarded, a process which arouses suspicion in some quarters. So here they are again.

NOTE: Players must complete 5 qualifying rounds. Points are awarded depending on you position in the stableford competition - for example, if you win in a field of 50 you receive 50 points and if you are last you get 1 point. Your average is the total points divided by the rounds played.  There are various adjustments made to this depending on the number of players, guests etc and an allowance made to ensure those playing more rounds than others are not unduly penalised for playing those extra rounds, which provides the greater risk of a low position.

The positions therefore represent and reflect the consistency of players over the season.
