1. With 51 people playing at the Army and at least half of them getting lost somewhere on the route there, it is fair to say that the course comes into the 'best kept secrets' category! The Secretarial directions were of course as impeccable as ever so with the SatNavs working overtime, one can only conclude that when the top brass placed the course in a Hampshire forest, they had national security in mind! 2. Though the course was difficult to score well on, Ian Sellers achieved a highly creditable 39 to win from John Hartnett. This was Ian's third day victory - July 02 at Blackmoor and Banstead Downs in April 05 being the others - and brings him down to a handicap of 11 which one feels he has the potential to improve on still further. Well done Ian on your latest BAGS success. 3. Graham Wright won the 100 round Trophy on Countback (strange how you can go off people!) with a net 71 in this Strokeplay Competition. 4. The first Chairman's Trophy standings of the season show three players over the 100 mark after three events. Ian leads with 105 and the figure of 102 is shared by Steve Walters and Andy Harper. Of the NQs look out for Graham when he adds his next round score to his 37 and 36 and I'm sure there will soon be others pushing their three round score higher than the 3 x 36 average of 108. 5. While the Treasurer's does not reach the qualifying stage until Ham later this week, Steve advises me that Ian, Steve and Andy are all making strong runs, and Peter Barkham is unofficial leader in the par 3. 6. Though we're geared up for our day at Ham next Thursday, much of our recent attention has been focused on the Charity event. Thanks are due to those players who have responded to our request for early payment as there is a huge amount of work to do in preparation even after the cash comes in. As part of our attempt to simplify procedures in an event of this size, we are producing a team scorecard with names and handicaps preprinted on them. Alan and Glenn will have a massive amount of admin. on the day and it is hoped this will reduce their workload to a bearable level. 7. Chris in particular has been hard at work producing ever more exciting auction prizes which will ensure that the evening session goes along at an exciting pace. Thanks are also due to Hedley for taking on the role of raffle ticket coordinator from Alan. He will be asking all those at Ham to contribute and we know that you'll be as generous as always. John Moody is busy preparing the programme for Charity Day and it is planned that these will be sent out to all participants in early June. In the meantime the OOP and full details of the event timings will be issued to participants later this week. 8. All Singles KOs players (and those in the Preliminary round of the Pairs) are reminded that they only have just over two weeks to play their first round matches, the deadline being May 31st. If there is a health problem which puts this date at risk, do give him a call to discuss so he may take a decision on the match. Otherwise please advise Alan of the result as soon as it's available - it is of course the winner's responsibility to do this and a simple e mail will suffice. 9. At the Army presentation, Alan asked for comments to me on the 9:18 format used that day. In true BAGS fashion, the response was underwhelming, the score being two, both against. While there is enthusiasm in principle from some members for this kind of day, it is clear that when it involves eating late (the meal at the Army started after 8pm), there is less interest. The late Army dinner arose from the Club's refusal to give us equal split tees after lunch. Next time we play this format - at Wildernesse in October - we'll have split tees spread equally across the field in the morning and afternoon so that will help.
Enjoy the generally fine weather and keep your fingers crossed for Thursday.
